Jane's Village
Janes Village was a neighborhood in Altadena, California. It was characterized by the 160 cottages built by Elisha P. Janes between 1924 and 1926. It was destroyed in the 2025 Eaton Fires. In 2002, it was designated a historic Altadena Heritage Area. History In 1924, E.P. Janes began building "Homes of Distinction in Scenic Altadena," These houses featured European architectural design elements and steep gables. Elisha Paul Janes E.P. Janes was born in New York in 1877. He was the brother of American novelist Elizabeth Dejeans. Before the construction of Janes Village, he sold Lake Water from Soap Lake in Washington (state), Washington, claiming it would cure illness. After being convicted of land fraud, he left Washington and moved to Manhattan, where he conducted a mail-order scam involving flimsy tires. Altadena () ("Alta", Spanish for "Upper", and "dena" from Pasadena) is an unincorporated area and census-designated place in the Verdugo Mountains region of Los Angeles County, California, approximately 14 miles (23 km) from the downtown Los Angeles Civic Center, and directly north of the city of Pasadena, California. The population was 42,777 at the 2010 census, up from 42,610 at the 2000 census. Eaton Fire
The Eaton Fire was a highly destructive wildfire in Los Angeles County, California, Los Angeles County, Southern California. The fire began on the evening of January 7, 2025, in the Eaton Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains, and was driven by powerful Santa Ana winds into foothill communities, particularly Altadena, California, Altadena. Elizabeth Dejeans
Frances Elizabeth Janes Budgett (December 27, 1868 – February 6, 1928), writing under the pen name Elizabeth Dejeans, was an American novelist. Three silent films were based on works by Dejeans. Early life Frances Elizabeth Janes was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, the daughter of Leroy Lansing Janes and Harriet Waterbury Scudder Janes. Her mother was born in India; her maternal grandfather was Presbyterian missionary Henry Martyn Scudder. She spent part of her childhood in Japan, when her father, an American Civil War veteran, was working as a missionary teacher in Kumamoto. She attended the University of Michigan, but left to marry. Career Dejeans wrote novels and short stories, mostly "popular female romances" focused on the New Woman and her modern problems. "Dejeans writes neither trash nor sensationalism," explained a 1912 reviewer, "but she does draw powerful pictures of the things that are not always pleasant to look upon." Soap Lake
Soap Lake is a meromictic soda lake in the town of Soap Lake, Washington formed by the Missoula Floods at the foot of the Grand Coulee. The lake gets its name from the naturally occurring foam that gives its water a soapy appearance, and because the lake's mineral-rich waters have a slick, soapy feel. The lake is approximately in area and deep. Qualities Soap Lake's mineral-rich waters have long been thought to have medicinal value. In fact, it is said that rival native tribes would call a truce when they came to Soap Lake to relax and heal themselves and their animals. This is verified by recorded history and the number of Native American artifacts found in the area over the years.
