James Read Chadwick
James Read Chadwick (November 2, 1844 – September 23, 1905) was an American gynecologist and medical librarian remembered for describing the Chadwick sign of early pregnancy in 1887. Early life and education Chadwick was born in Boston on November 2, 1844. He was a son of Christopher Chamberlain Chadwick (1821–1871), a Boston merchant, and Louisa (née Read) Chadwick (1821–1913). His sister, Elizabeth (née Chadwick) Whittier, was married to Brig. Gen. Charles A. Whittier. He received a B.A. at Harvard in 1865, an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1871, studied obstetrics in Europe from 1871 to 1873, and then worked as a gynecologist in Boston. Career From 1874 he worked at the Boston City Hospital, helping to found the gynecological department, and taught at Harvard Medical School. James Canham Read
James Canham Read (1855–1894) was a British bigamist and murderer known as the Southend Murderer or Prittlewell Murderer. The entire affair and aftermath is sometimes called the Southend Mystery. Friends (and lovers) called him Jimmy Read, however, he used multiple names to disguise his several relationships, and fabricated other false characters to help excuse his absences to his various partners. Given the timing of events and the publicity involved, the events may have partially influenced Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" which was released the following year. Life He was born in Kentish Town in north London the son of John Canham Read and his wife Eliza Fanny Gosbee from Dublin. In his childhood he was a choirboy at St Mary's Chapel of Ease in Shadwell but became an agnostic. James Morgan Read
James Morgan Read, II (1908–1985) was a Quaker and President of Wilmington College, Ohio from 1960 to 1969. He also served as United Nations Deputy High Commissioner from 1951 to 1960, and was a vice president of the Charles F. Kettering Foundation from 1969 until his retirement in 1974. Early life Read was born in Camden, New Jersey, the son of James Morgan Read Sr., a Methodist Minister. He graduated from Dickinson College, Pennsylvania, in 1929, and went on to earn a D. Phil. from Marburg University in 1932, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1940. Career From 1932 to 1934 Read taught history at Lycoming College and served as Associate Professor of History and then Chairman of the Social Sciences Department at the University of Louisville from 1935 to 1943. James Read (actor)
James Christopher Read (born July 31, 1953) is an American actor. He played the role of George Hazard in the ''North and South'' television miniseries, and had a recurring role as Victor Bennett on the supernatural series ''Charmed'' between 2001 and 2006. Early life Read was born in Buffalo, New York. His family moved to Niskayuna, New York where he and his brother William Read III went to school. He started acting as a student of law at the University of Oregon where he graduated in 1976. He studied acting in New York City and then did several Off-Broadway and regional theaters such as '' The Denver Center Theatre Company'', where he had a couple of leading roles and spent three seasons.
