''James L. Kuber'' is a self-unloading articulated barge owned by Rand Logistics and operated by Grand River Navigation. The vessel was originally named ''Reserve'' and was constructed as a bulk carrier, being launched in 1952. It was converted to a barge in 2007. Construction The ship was launched on November 15, 1952 for the Columbia Transportation Company's division of Oglebay Norton Company. It was built in 1953 as ''Reserve'' at Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Michigan. It was one of eight loosely similar carriers classified as AAA-class ships. The AAA-class carriers were constructed due to a post-World War II need for iron ore. IMO Number
The IMO number of the International Maritime Organization is a generic term covering two distinct meanings. The IMO ship identification number, is a type of hull number used as a unique ship identifier, and the IMO company and registered owner identification number, is used to identify uniquely each company and/or registered owner managing ships of at least 100 gross tons (gt). The schemes are managed in parallel, but IMO company/owner numbers may also be obtained by managers of vessels ''not'' having IMO ship numbers. IMO numbers were introduced to improve maritime safety and reduce fraud and pollution, under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Bay Shipbuilding Company (BSC) is a shipyard and dry dock company in Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin. As of 2015, Bay Ships was a subsidiary of Fincantieri Marine Group and produces articulated tug and barges, OPA-90 compliant double hull tank ships and offshore support vessels. It also provides repair services to the lake freighter fleet. In the past the shipyard located in Sturgeon Bay has operated under several different names and traces its history back to 1918. The company also built 40,000 ton Lake freighters in the 1970s and 1980s.
