James Goldsmith
Sir James Michael Goldsmith (26 February 1933 – 18 July 1997) was a French-British financier and politician who was a member of the Goldsmith family. His controversial business and finance career led to ongoing clashes with British media, frequently involving litigation or the threat of litigation. In 1994 he was elected to represent a French constituency as a Member of the European Parliament. He founded the short-lived Eurosceptic Referendum Party in the United Kingdom, which became an early campaigner for opposition to Britain's membership of the European Union. Adolphe Benedict Hayum Goldschmidt (1838 – 6 April 1918) was co-inheritor of the Goldschmidt family's bank in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Life His father was Benedikt Hayum Goldschmidt, founder of the bank ''B.H. Goldschmidt'' and consul to the Grand Duke of Tuscany. One of the richest families in Europe, in 1900, after their father's death, he and his brother, Maximilian decided to close the bank and leave Frankfurt. The Goldschmidt family is a family of German Jewish descent, originally from Frankfurt am Main, known for their success in banking and finance. With origins tracing back to the 15th century, most members were forced to leave Frankfurt after the 1614 Fettmilch uprising, and did not return until the 18th century. The family was interwoven particularly with the Rothschild family, the Bischoffsheim family of Mainz, and with the Bartolome Family, one of the richest families of Monaco. Edward René David Goldsmith (8 November 1928 – 21 August 2009), widely known as Teddy Goldsmith, was an Anglo-French environmentalist, writer and philosopher. He was a member of the prominent Goldsmith family, the eldest son of Major Frank Goldsmith, and elder brother of the financier James Goldsmith.
