James Cycle Co
The James Cycle Co Ltd., Greet, Birmingham, England, was one of many British cycle and motorcycle makers based in the English Midlands, particularly Birmingham. Most of their light motorcycles, often with the characteristic maroon finish, used Villiers and, later, AMC two-stroke engines. James were prolific bicycle and motorcycle manufacturers from 1884 to 1966. The company was taken over by Associated Motor Cycles in 1951 and combined with Francis-Barnett in 1957. In 1966 the company became one of the many British motorcycle companies forced out of business by Japanese competition. History In 1884, Harold "Harry" James founded The James Cycle Company in Birmingham to manufacture bicycles. The first works were at 121 Constitution Hill. Associated Motor Cycles
Associated Motor Cycles (AMC) was a British motorcycle manufacturer founded by the Collier brothers as a parent company for the Matchless and AJS motorcycle companies. It later absorbed Francis-Barnett, James Cycle Co, James, and Norton Motorcycle Company, Norton before incorporation into Norton-Villiers. Henry Herbert Collier founded Matchless as a cycle company in 1878. His sons Henry (Harry) and Charles (Charlie) joined him and the name was changed to H. Collier & Sons. History AJS had been bought by Matchless's owners, the Colliers, in 1931 and Sunbeam Cycles, Sunbeam was added in 1937 from Imperial Chemical Industries. The name of the Matchless, Matchless Motor Cycles company was changed to "Amalgamated Motor Cycles Ltd" in 1937 and "Associated Motor Cycles (AMC)" in 1938. James Autocycle
The James Autocycle was a two-stroke, autocycle manufactured by the James Cycle Co from 1946 to 1953. A pre-World War II design, the autocycle continued in production until late 1953 with a Villiers Engineering Junior De Luxe 98cc engine in a typical autocycle frame. The bike was available in Deluxe and Superlux models. Deluxe The James Deluxe Autocycle was manufactured from 1946 to 1949 and has a engine fed with a Villiers Junior carburettor and driven by one gear and a clutch. The frame was a single downtube and rigid frame. The front fork is a central undamped spring. Original tyres were Dunlop Carrier 26 inch by 2 inch (oversized) and rims are Dunlop WMO 36 hole in a silver argenized color. The drive train was chain and sprocket. Braking was through front and rear four inch drum brakes. Lighting provided by a six volt lamp on the front and four volt for the tail light.
