Minor League Baseball Baxter played for the Toledo Mud Hens of the Southern Michigan League in 1914 and later the American Association in 1927. James Phinney Baxter III (February 15, 1893 in Portland, Maine – June 17, 1975 in Williamstown, Massachusetts) was an American historian, educator, and academic, who won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for History for his book ''Scientists Against Time'' (1946). He was also the author of ''The Introduction of the Ironclad Warship'' (1933). Life Baxter was the grandson of historian and mayor of Portland, Maine, James Phinney Baxter and the son of Maine Governor Percival Proctor Baxter. The Invercargill Tragedy was a familicide that took place in Invercargill, New Zealand on 8 April 1908. James Reid Baxter killed his wife and five children with an iron stove scraper before shooting himself in the head with a shotgun. It was the worst mass murder in Southland. Background The Baxter family had moved to Invercargill around April 1907. James Reid Baxter started a small floristry business. Weeks before the killings, Baxter had become ill with cholera. This apparently caused him to begin acting in a depressed manner, sleeping often and eating little. During this time, he slipped on a rock in Bluff, injuring his head. Around 3 April 1908, Baxter purchased a .22 caliber Remington rifle. He returned it on 6 April, exchanging it for the 12-gauge shotgun with which he would later kill himself. James Curran Baxter (29 September 1939 – 14 April 2001) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a left half. He is generally regarded as one of the country's greatest ever players. He was born, educated and started his career in Fife, but his peak playing years were in the early 1960s with the Glasgow club Rangers, whom he helped to win ten trophies between 1960 and 1965, and where he became known as "Slim Jim". However, he started drinking heavily during a four-month layoff caused by a leg fracture in December 1964, his fitness suffered, and he was transferred to Sunderland in summer 1965. In two and a half years at Sunderland he played 98 games and scored 12 goals, becoming known for drinking himself unconscious the night before a match and playing well the next day. James Baxter (born 1904, date of death unknown) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a wing half. Career Baxter was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He started his career with local team Parkhead, and was part of the team that won the 1923–24 Scottish Junior Cup, beating Baillieston Juniors after a replay. In August 1925, he was signed by English First Division side Leicester City. Making his debut on 24 April 1926, starting in a 4–0 defeat to Bury. Baxter struggled to get first team football, failing to make a single league appearance during the 1926–27 season. He would eventually return to the team in December 1927, starting three consecutive league games. Baxter scored his first on only goal for Leicester on 8 September 1928, coming in a 6–3 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
