James (automobile Company)
The James automobile manufactured by the J & M Motor Car Company of Lawrenceburg, Indiana was produced from 1909 to 1911. History H. K. James tested his first car, called a Model A, on April 2, 1909, on a 100-mile test run. A reporter from ''Cycle and Automobile Trade Journal'' wrote that the James "will climb any ordinary hill with two or four passengers." The Model A was a high wheeler and cost between $700 and $800 (). Production was minimal, and in 1911 the company switched production to a larger car called the Dearborn. It lasted one year. A high wheeler is a car which uses large diameter wheels that are similar to those used by horse-drawn vehicles. These cars were produced until about 1915, predominantly in the United States. Design High wheelers were derived from horse-drawn wagons, and often were conversions of these. Similarly to these wagons, they often had wood-spoke wheels, suspensions, and boxy wooden bodies. The large-diameter slender wheels provided ample ground clearance on the primitive roads of the late 19th century, and frequently had solid rubber tires. These cars were produced in many body styles. Lawrenceburg is a city and the county seat of Dearborn County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,129 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. The Brass Era is an American term for the early period of automotive manufacturing, named for the prominent brass fittings used during this time for such features as lights and radiators. It is generally considered to encompass 1896 through 1915, a time when cars were often referred to as horseless carriages.
