Jack Myers (biologist)
John Edgar "Jack" Myers (July 10, 1913 – December 28, 2006) was an American molecular biologist and writer of popular science. Biography Born in Pennsylvania, Myers graduated from Juniata College in 1933, and gained a Masters from Montana State University in 1935, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1939. Myers joined the University of Texas in 1941, teaching until 1980. He continued researching as an emeritus professor until 1999. His areas of expertise were photosynthesis, phototropism and algae. His work included research on growing algae in space. He was elected as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1975. In 1998, he was awarded the Founders Award by the American Society for Gravitational and Space Biology. Other awards include The Darbaker Prize from the Botanical Society of America in 1959. Jack Myers (American Football)
John Melvin "Moose" Myers (October 8, 1924 – December 24, 2020) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He played college football at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and professionally in National Football League (NFL) with the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams. Myers served as the head football coach at the University of the Pacific (United States), University of the Pacific in Stockton, California from 1953 to 1960, compiling a record of 39–33–5. He was also the athletic director at Pacific from 1956 to 1961. Biography Myers attended high school in Ventura, California, and served in the United States Navy as an ensign during World War II. Myers first came to Pacific in 1951 for one season as the backfield coach for the Pacific Tigers football, Tigers before returning to the NFL as a player in 1952. Jack Elliott Myers
Jack Elliott Myers (November 29, 1941 – November 23, 2009), was an American poet and educator. He was Texas Poet Laureate in 2003, and served on the faculty of Southern Methodist University in Dallas for more than 30 years. He was director of creative writing at SMU from 2001 through 2009. Myers co-founded The Writer's Garret, a nonprofit literary center in Dallas, with his wife, Thea Temple. He published numerous books of and about poetry, and served as a mentor for aspiring writers at SMU and as part of the writers' community and mentoring project of The Writer's Garret. Early life Jack Myers was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, to Jewish parents Alvin G. and Ruth L. Myers, and developed an interest in writing and poetry at a young age. Jack Myers is an American media ecologist, author, and speaker. He is the founder of MediaVillage, a media company. Education Myers graduated from the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University with a major in radio-television. He holds a master's degree in media ecology from New York University, where he studied under Dr. Neil Postman. Career Myers began his career as a marketing director at CBS in the mid-1970s. In 2010, he launched MediaVillage, that features commentaries, thought-leadership, and insights from columnists, and journalists. It incorporates The Myers Report, MediaVillage Knowledge Exchange, and AdvancingDiversity.org.
