Jack Earl (Australian Sailor)
Jack Beaumont Earl (1908 – 1994), was an Australian sailor and noted marine artist. He achieved fame as the captain of the Kathleen Gillett, the second Australian yacht to sail around the world. He was also one of the founders of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Early life Jack Beaumont Earl was born in Durban, South Africa, in 1908 before emigrating to Australia in 1911. His childhood was spent on Darnley Island in the Torres Strait where his father was an administrator and schoolteacher. Earl learnt to sail with the Islander children in dugout canoes and in pearling luggers around the islands of northern Australia. Schooling required a move to Sydney. As a young man, Earl earned a living as an artist for the newspapers ''Truth'' and the ''Sunday Times''. In 1933 Earl married the school teacher and author Kathleen Gillett. Sydney To Hobart Yacht Race
The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is an annual event hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, starting in Sydney, New South Wales, on Boxing Day and finishing in Hobart, Tasmania. The race distance is approximately . The race is run in conjunction with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, and is widely considered to be one of the most difficult Yacht racing, yacht races in the world. The race was initially planned to be a Cruising (maritime), cruise by Peter Luke and some friends who had formed a club for those who enjoyed cruising as opposed to racing, however when a visiting British Royal Navy Officer, Captain John Illingworth, suggested it be made a race, the event was born. The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race has grown over the decades, since the inaugural race in 1945, to become one of the top three offshore yacht races in the world, and it now attracts maxi yachts from all around the globe. Australian Honours And Awards System
The Australian honours and awards system refers to all orders, decorations, and medals, as instituted by letters patent from the Monarch of Australia and countersigned by the Australian prime minister at the time, that have been progressively introduced since 14 February 1975. The Australian honours and awards system excludes all state and local government, and private, issued awards and medals (although a few can be recognised in the order of wearing, like those in the Order of St John). Honours and awards have been present in Australia since pre-Federation, primarily from the Imperial honours and awards system. This Imperial system remained in place until its full phase out in 1994 (although the Monarch of Australia may still confer some of these honours to Australians in their personal capacity). Royal Art Society Of New South Wales
The Royal Art Society of New South Wales, or Royal Art Society of NSW, was established in 1880 as the Art Society of New South Wales by a group of artists including Arthur and George Collingridge, with the aim of creating an Australian school of painting, and separate from the NSW Academy of Art. Their first exhibition was held in the Garden Palace. In 1902 the Society merged with the Society of Artists and received royal assent from King Edward VII to add "Royal" to their name. Julian Ashton Art School
The Julian Ashton Art School was established by Julian Ashton in 1890 as the "Academy Julian", (perhaps a reference to the Académie Julian in Paris) has been an influential art school in Australia. For a long time it was known as the Sydney Art School. The Julian Ashton Art School building, and some of its equipment, have been heritage listed, in part due to the significance of the school itself. History After Julian Ashton died in 1942, the school was run by Henry Gibbons (1884–1972). Henry Gibbons had started at the school as a student in April 1919 and soon became the teacher of the night drawing classes. In 1924 Gibbons proposed starting a Saturday afternoon class so that he could teach some of the night drawing students to paint. The Saturday class started in February 1924 and the first nine students were Dobell, Dundas, Passmore, Badham, Lawrence, Brackenreg, Byrne, Hubble and Cox. John Illingworth (yacht Designer)
Captain John Holden Illingworth (1903 – 7 March 1980) was an English naval engineer in the Royal Navy who achieved fame as a yacht racer and yacht designer. Described on his death as "the father of post-war offshore sailing racing", he held most of the senior positions in British yachting and pioneered several innovations in the sport. Career In pre-war England Illingworth was a Royal Navy officer serving on submarines. In his leisure time, he designed sailing boats and raced offshore. During World War II he served as a captain in the Navy. In 1945, after the end of the war, Illingworth was in Australia, organising repairs in Sydney for the British Pacific Fleet. He was invited to join other yachtsmen in a cruise to Hobart in Tasmania, which he promptly suggested should be a race.
