Hindustani Classical Music
Hindustani classical music is the Indian classical music, classical music of the Indian subcontinent's northern regions. It may also be called North Indian classical music or ''Uttar Bhartiya shastriya sangeet''. The term ''shastriya sangeet'' literally means classical music, and is also used to refer to Indian classical music in general. It is played on instruments like the veena, sitar and sarod. Girija Devi
Girija Devi (8 May 1929 – 24 October 2017) was an Indian classical singer of the Seniya and Banaras gharanas. She performed classical and light classical music and helped elevate the profile of thumri. She was dubbed as the 'Queen of Thumri' for her contribution in the genre. She died on 24 October 2017. Early life Girija Devi was born in Varanasi, on 8 May 1929, to Ramdeo Rai, a zamindar. Her father played the harmonium and taught music, and had Girija Devi take lessons in singing '' khyal'' and ''tappa'' from vocalist and sarangi player Sarju Prasad Misra starting at the age of five. She starred in the movie ''Yaad rahe'' aged nine and continued her studies under Chand Misra in a variety of styles. Subhra Guha
Subhra Guha (born 1956) is a vocalist in the Hindustani classical music tradition from the Agra gharana style of singing. Her repertoire covers khyals, thumri and dadra. Biography Subhra Guha was born in Calcutta in 1956. Her family encouraged her to pursue Hindustani classical music, as she showed talent in music from a young age. Initially, she learnt music under Satish Bhowmick. From 1970, she trained in singing in Agra gharana style under Sunil Bose. From 1982, for ten years, she was a student at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata where she was taught by K. G. Ginde and Bhowmick. She learned thumri rendition from Dhruvatara Joshi. Mashkoor Ali Khan
Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan is an Indian classical singer and teacher from the Kirana musical style. As the grandson of Abdul Karim Khan, a founder of the Kirana style, he is a descendant of the gharana's family lineage. He was educated by his father, sarangi player Shakoor Khan. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Road is an important road in South Kolkata that runs in a north-west to south-east direction. It connects the localities of Tollygunge in the north-west and Rajpur Sonarpur in the south through Garia. Ustad Rashid Khan
Ustad Rashid Khan (1 July 1968 – 9 January 2024) was an Indian classical musician in the Hindustani tradition. He belonged to the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana and was the great-grandson of gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan. He was awarded the Padma Shri, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, in 2022 by the Indian Government in the field of Art. Early life Rashid Khan was born in Sahaswan, Badayun, Uttar Pradesh on 1 July 1968. He received his initial training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan (1909–1993).
