Ivorian Popular Movement Of The Great West
The Ivorian Popular Movement of the Great West (''Mouvement populaire ivoirien du Grand Ouest'' MPIGO). One of two rebel movements in the west of CĂ´te d'Ivoire, created to reinforce the rebel presence after the Marcoussis accords. Founded by sergent FĂŠlix Doh (killed April 2003 in an ambush), MPIGO recruited mostly in the ethnically libĂŠro-ivoirienne Dan/Yacouba speaking region. MPIGO had some 6000 men under arms when it signed a ceasefire on 8 January 2003. Since 2004 MPIGO has been a political party, functioning as a junior partner to the Patriotic Movement of CĂ´te d'Ivoire (MPCI) in the Forces Nouvelles de CĂ´te d'Ivoire coalition led by Guillaume Soro. Dan Language
Dan is a Southern Mande language spoken primarily in Ivory Coast (~800,000 speakers) and Liberia (150,000â200,000 speakers). There is also a population of about 800 speakers in Guinea. Dan is a tonal language, with around 9-11 contour and register tones depending on the dialect. Alternative names for the language include Yacouba or Yakubasa, Gio, Gyo, Gio-Dan, and Da. Dialects are Gio (Liberian Dan), Gweetaawu (Eastern Dan), Blowo (Western Dan), and Kla. Kla is evidently a distinct language. The Patriotic Movement of Ivory Coast (''Mouvement patriotique de CĂ´te d'Ivoire'', MPCI) was the major rebel group in the Ivorian Civil War, which since 2005, has transformed itself into a leading political party. Background of the MPCI and the Civil War During the Civil War, the MPCI was referred to as the political wing of the rebel movement, with the Forces Nouvelles de CĂ´te d'Ivoire as its armed wing. Led by northerner Guillaume Soro Kigbafori, who began his political career with the Student Federation of Ivory Coast which was closely allied to the then opposition Ivorian Popular Front (FPI). The Forces Nouvelles de CĂ´te d'Ivoire ( English: ''New Forces of Ivory Coast''; abbreviated FNCI, FN or FAFN) is a political coalition that was formed in December 2002, in the wake of the first peace accords of the Ivorian Civil War. Guillaume Soro
Guillaume Kigbafori Soro (born 8 May 1972) is an Ivorian politician who was the Prime Minister of CĂ´te d'Ivoire from April 2007 to March 2012. Prior to his service as Prime Minister, Soro led the Patriotic Movement of CĂ´te d'Ivoire, and later the New Forces as its Secretary-General.Oliver Furley and Roy May.
