Itajara (horse)
Itajara was an undefeated Brazilian Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Brazilian Triple Crown and is considered by many to be the greatest Brazilian racehorse. Background Itajara was bred by Haras São José e Expedictus, out of the homebred graded stakes winner Apple Honey. His sire Felicio was a Group One stakes winner in his native France who had become a successful sire in Brazil. Racing career Itajara won all seven of his starts, all of them run at Hipódromo da Gávea. He was trained by Francisco Saraiva and ridden by José Ferreira dos Reis in all of his races. Itajara won at distances from 1100 to 3000 meters, on both dirt and turf tracks. Itajara won four group one races, including the Brazilian Rio de Janeiro Triple Crown. Stallion
A stallion is a male horse that has not been gelded (castrated). Stallions follow the conformation and phenotype of their breed, but within that standard, the presence of hormones such as testosterone may give stallions a thicker, "cresty" neck, as well as a somewhat more muscular physique as compared to female horses, known as ''mares'', and castrated males, called ''geldings''. Nearco
Nearco (January 24, 1935 – June 27, 1957) was an Italian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse described by '' Thoroughbred Heritage'' as "one of the greatest racehorses of the Twentieth Century" and "one of the most important sires of the century." He was unbeaten, winning 14 races at distances from 1000m (5 furlongs) to 3000m (1 mile 7 furlongs), including the Derby Italiano and Grand Prix de Paris. He was then sold for a record amount to Martin H. Benson and stood stud in England, where he became the patriarch of several of the most dominant sire lines in Thoroughbred history. Breeding Nearco was bred in Italy by Federico Tesio, who also bred several other champions including the undefeated Ribot. Owen Tudor (horse)
Owen Tudor (1938–1966) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from 1940 to 1942 he ran twelve times and won six races. His most important win came as a three-year-old in the summer of 1941 when he won the "New Derby" at Newmarket. During the Second World War many British racecourses were closed either for safety reasons or because the land was needed for military use. Epsom Downs Racecourse was used throughout the war for an anti-aircraft battery, leading to the creation of a substitute or "New" version of the race. Owen Tudor went on to win a substitute "Ascot Gold Cup" at Newmarket in 1942. At the end of that season he was retired to stud where he had considerable success as a sire of winners. Right Royal
Right Royal (1958–1973) was a French Thoroughbred race horse and sire. He was the best two-year-old in France in 1960 when his wins included the Grand Critérium. He was the dominant three-year-old of his generation in Europe in the spring and summer of 1961, winning the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix du Jockey Club and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Right Royal was defeated in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and was retired to stud where he had some success as a breeding stallion. Background Right Royal was a brown horse bred in France by his owner Elisabeth Couturié. Bois Roussel (1935–1955) was a French-bred Thoroughbred champion racehorse and a leading broodmare sire. He won the 1938 Epsom Derby on his second racecourse appearance. Background He was named for Haras du Bois-Roussel, the breeding farm in Alençon where he was foaled. His breeder was Leon Volterra who acquired his sire, Vatout, and his dam as part of his purchase of Haras du Bois Roussel from American, Jefferson Davis Cohn. According to ''Thoroughbred Heritage'', his dam, Plucky Liege, was one of the most important broodmares of the 20th century. At the time of foaling Bois Roussel Plucky Liege was 23 years old.
