Infanta Isabel of Coimbra (Isabella of Portugal) (1 March 1432 – 2 December 1455) was a Portuguese infanta and Queen of Portugal as the first spouse of King Afonso V of Portugal. Life Born in Coimbra in 1432, Isabella was a daughter of the Infante Peter, Duke of Coimbra, and Isabella of Aragon, Countess of Urgel. Her paternal grandfather was King John I of Portugal and her maternal grandfather was James II, Count of Urgel. Isabella received a comprehensive Renaissance education influenced by the works of Christine de Pizan. Queen Isabella's father was the regent for her cousin Afonso V during his minority. In 1441, Pedro arranged the betrothal of Isabella and Afonso V. Saint Vincent Panels
The ''Saint Vincent Panels'', or the ''Adoration of Saint Vincent'' panels, are a polyptych consisting of six panels that were perhaps painted in the 1450s. They are attributed to the Portuguese painter Nuno Gonçalves, who was active from 1450 to 1471. Traditionally, the polyptych is dated to the 1450s due to the putative prominence of Prince Henry the Navigator among the persons represented in the panels (Henry died in 1460). Controversy concerning the true nature of Henry's presence in the panels – if any – along with the inclusion of figures that can be identified as his brothers, all of whom died before 1450, renders it difficult to assign any secure date for the creation of the panels other than sometime during the ''floruit'' of the painter Gonçalves. John, Prince of Antioch (1431 – 11 September 1457) was the second son of Infante Peter, Duke of Coimbra, and Isabella of Urgell, Duchess of Coimbra. Life After the Battle of Alfarrobeira, where his father's army was defeated by the forces of Afonso V, John went into exile in Burgundy together with his brother James and sister Beatrice. His aunt Isabella, wife of Duke Philip the Good, was able to offer protection to her nephews and niece and ensure they enjoyed high social position. In May 1456, John was made a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He then sailed to Cyprus and married Charlotte of Cyprus in Nicosia and was accorded the title Prince of Antioch. The Battle of Alfarrobeira () took place on 20 May 1449. It was a confrontation between the forces commanded by King Afonso V of Portugal and his uncle Afonso, Duke of Braganza, against the army of the rebellious Peter, Duke of Coimbra.
