Irene Hoffar Reid
Lillian Irene Hoffar Reid (1908 – 1994) was a Canadian painter. She was in the first graduating class, June 1929, at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Art (now the Emily Carr University of Art and Design). She taught at the Vancouver School of Art from 1933 to 1937. Biography Reid was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1908. She left King George High School early to attend the newly opened Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts (VSDAA). There she was trained by Frederick Varley, Charles H. Scott and Jock Macdonald, and learned about the Group of Seven. Reid is quoted saying: "In 1928, at the Pacific National Exhibition, I viewed paintings by the Group of Seven. I saw a large painting of a mountain by Lawren Harris and I felt that I had never seen a mountain before. I was influenced by the Group and began to paint larger and more boldly designed canvases". Frederick Varley
Frederick Horsman Varley (January 2, 1881 – September 8, 1969) was a member of the Canadian Group of Seven. Career Early life Varley was born in Sheffield, England, in 1881, the son of Lucy (Barstow) and Samuel James Smith Varley the 7th. He began his art training there in 1892, at the age of 11, studied art in Sheffield (1892-1899) and attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp (1900-1902), Belgium, while he worked on the docks. Charles Hepburn Scott
Charles Hepburn Scott (29 November 1886 – 1964) was a Scottish-born Canadian artist. Early life Scott was born in Loudoun, Ayrshire, to Robert Hepburn and Jean (née Carmichael) Scott. Career Scott was a student at Glasgow School of Art from 1903 to 1909, where he studied both drawing and painting while working as a letter artist and art teacher. After graduating from the Glasgow school of art in 1909, he emigrated to Canada in 1912, where he was appointed as Art Supervisor for Calgary Schools. Eventually, Scott settled in Vancouver in 1914, working as Art Supervisor for Vancouver Schools. After the outbreak of World War I, Scott enlisted in the Canadian Force, serving overseas from 1915 to 1918. Jock Macdonald
James Williamson Galloway Macdonald (31 May 1897 – 3 December 1960), commonly known in his professional life as Jock Macdonald, was a member of Painters Eleven (Painters 11, or P11), whose goal was to promote abstract art in Canada. Macdonald was a trailblazer in Canadian art from the 1930s to 1960. He was the first painter to exhibit abstract art in Vancouver, and throughout his life he championed Canadian avant-garde artists at home and abroad. The Group of Seven, once known as the Algonquin School, was a group of Canadian landscape painters from 1920 to 1933, with "a like vision". It originally consisted of Franklin Carmichael (1890–1945), Lawren Harris (1885–1970), A. Y. Jackson (1882–1974), Frank Johnston (artist), Frank Johnston (1888–1949), Arthur Lismer (1885–1969), J. E. H. MacDonald (1873–1932), and Frederick Varley (1881–1969). A. J. Lawren Stewart Harris LL. D. (October 23, 1885 – January 29, 1970) was a Canadian painter, best known as one of the founding members of the Group of Seven. The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the campus of the University of British Columbia.
