International Zone
An international zone is any area not fully subject to the border control policies of the state in which it is located. There are several types of international zones ranging from special economic zones and sterile zones at ports of entry exempt from customs rules to concessions over which administration is ceded to one or more foreign states. International zones may also maintain distinct visa policies from the rest of the surrounding state. Interzone (book)
''Interzone'' is a collection of short stories and other early works by William S. Burroughs from 1953 to 1958. The collection was first published by Viking Penguin in 1989, although several of the stories had already been printed elsewhere, including an earlier publication titled ''Early Routines''. The title was inspired by the International Zone in Tangiers, Morocco, where Burroughs lived for a time and by which he was greatly influenced. A notable inclusion is "Twilight's Last Gleamings", written in 1938 in collaboration with childhood friend Kells Elvins, and widely thought to be Burroughs' first attempt at fiction. The villain of the piece, Doctor Benway, was to play a pivotal role in ''Naked Lunch''. (This story differs from another Burroughs piece titled "Twilight's Last Gleamings," which was published in the 1970s collection, '' Exterminator!''.) ''Interzone'' features many characters and concepts that would manifest themselves in ''Naked Lunch'', '' Nova Express'' a ... Naked Lunch
''Naked Lunch'' (first published as ''The Naked Lunch'') is a 1959 novel by American author William S. Burroughs. The novel does not follow a clear linear plot, but is instead structured as a series of non-chronological "routines". Many of these routines follow William Lee, an opioid addict who travels to the surreal city of Interzone and begins working for the organization "Islam Inc." Burroughs wrote ''Naked Lunch'' while living in the Tangier International Zone, which inspired the book's Interzone setting. There, he witnessed escalating tensions between European powers and the Moroccan Nationalist Movement, which are reflected in Interzone's fictional political struggles. Burroughs also struggled with opioid addiction, which the novel describes extensively, although critics disagree whether the novel uses opioids as a metaphor for broader forms of control. The novel was highly controversial for its depictions of drug use, sadomasochism, and body horror, including a famous de ... Interzone (album)
''Interzone'' is the thirteenth studio album by American composer John Zorn developed to pay tribute to the influence of writers William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin and released on Zorn's Tzadik label in 2010. Reception The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 4 stars stating "''Interzone'' is one of John Zorn's more ambitious multi-part pieces. While some claim this is a return to the file card process and recordings like '' Spillane'', ''Interzone'' feels different: it's more an ensemble work even when it travels through genres, dynamics, textures, and musical geographies".Jurek, T.Allmusic Reviewaccessed July 29, 2011 Track listing :''All compositions by John Zorn'' # Interzone 1 - 15:20 # Interzone 2 - 27:37 # Interzone 3 - 11:21 Personnel * Ikue Mori: Electronics * John Zorn: Saxophone * Marc Ribot: Guitars, Banjo, Sintir, Cümbüs * Kenny Wollesen: Drums, Vibes, Chimes, Typani, Wollesonics, Percussion * Cyro Baptista: Percussion * John Medeski Antho ...
