International Institute For Environment And Development
The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is an independent policy research institute (think tank) whose stated mission is to "build a fairer, more sustainable world, using evidence, action and influence in partnership with others." Its director is Dr Tom Mitchell. IIED is one of a small group of independent, not-for-profit organisations that has provided core concepts and methods for thinking about sustainability and social change. IIED's main way of working is through partnership with like-minded organisations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The institute's work is currently divided into four main areas: natural resources, climate change, human settlements and sustainable markets. IIED is based in central London near Chancery Lane and has an office in Edinburgh. World Resources Report
The world is the totality of entities, the whole of reality, or everything that exists. The nature of the world has been conceptualized differently in different fields. Some conceptions see the world as unique, while others talk of a "plurality of worlds". Some treat the world as one simple object, while others analyze the world as a complex made up of parts. In scientific cosmology, the world or universe is commonly defined as "the totality of all space and time; all that is, has been, and will be". Theories of modality talk of possible worlds as complete and consistent ways how things could have been. Earthscan
Earthscan is an English-language publisher of books and journals on climate change, sustainable development and environmental technology for academic, professional and general readers. History The Earthscan Publications imprint was founded by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) in the 1980s and was run from 1987 by Neil Middleton. After making a loss, Earthscan became an independent publisher, moving initially to Kogan Page, although still printing many books emanating from IIED research. James Skea
Sir James Ferguson "Jim" Skea CBE FRSE ( ; born 1 September 1953) is a British academic. He is currently Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for its seventh assessment cycle, and a Professor of Sustainable Energy at Imperial College London. Before being elected as chair, Skea was co-chair of Working Group III of the IPCC. He was a founding member of the UK Government's Committee on Climate Change and currently chairs Scotland's Just Transition Commission. He was a co-author of the IPCC 2018 Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C. In July 2023, Skea was elected as Chair of the IPCC. Education Skea studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with a BSc in Mathematical Physics with first class Honours in 1975. Richard Sandbrook
John Richard Sandbrook OBE (13 August 1946 – 11 December 2005) was a co-founder of Friends of the Earth UK serving as Managing Director from 1974 to 1976, and Director of the International Institute for Environment and Development from 1989 to 1999. Sandbrook was born in Bath, the son of a naval officer. He was educated at Dauntsey's School and the University of East Anglia. He was President of the Union of UEA Students in 1967/8. For five years he was an accountant at Arthur Andersen. He was a co-founder of Friends of the Earth UK, and served as Managing Director from 1974 to 1976. From 1976 to 1999 he worked at the International Institute for Environment and Development, which pioneered a collaborative way of working with business. Initially he ran its marine programme, in 1983 he became vice-president for policy, in 1986 becoming executive director for Europe, and in 1989 becoming overall executive director until 1999. Ann Camilla Toulmin'', '' FRSE (; born 1954, Melbourne) is a British economist and former Director of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Her career has focused on policy research about agriculture, land, climate and livelihoods in dryland regions of Africa, particularly in Mali. She became a senior fellow of IIED in late June 2015, is an Associate of the Institute for New Economic Thinking, and Professor of Practice at the Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University. Education and career Toulmin is the daughter of philosopher Stephen Toulmin. She is married to Sir Mark Jones, and has three children. World Summit On Sustainable Development
The World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002, took place in South Africa, from 26 August to 4 September 2002. It was convened to discuss sustainable development organizations, 10 years after the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. (It was therefore also informally nicknamed "Rio 10.") Declarations The Johannesburg Declaration was the main outcome of the Summit; however, there were several other international agreements. Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations. Its job is to "provide governments at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies". The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) set up the IPCC in 1988. The United Nations General Assembly, United Nations endorsed the creation of the IPCC later that year. It has a secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted by the WMO. It has 195 Member states of the United Nations, member states who govern the IPCC. The member states elect a bureau of scientists to serve through an assessment cycle. A cycle is usually six to seven years. The bureau selects experts in their fields to prepare IPCC reports. Saleemul Huq
Saleemul Huq (2 October 1952 – 28 October 2023) was a Bangladeshi-British scientist and had been the Director of the International Centre for Climate Change & Development (ICCCAD) based in Bangladesh, also Professor at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). He was elected one of ''Nature's 10'' top scientists in 2022. Huq was an expert in the field of climate change, environment and development. He worked extensively in the inter-linkages between climate change mitigation, adaptation and sustainable development, from the perspective of developing countries, particularly in the least developed countries (LDCs).
