International Federation Of Societies For Microscopy
The International Federation of Societies for Microscopy (; ; ) is an international non-governmental organization representing microscopy. It currently has 36 national members and 7 associate members, which are split into three regional committees, the Committee for Asia-Pacific Societies of Microscopy, the European Microscopy Society and the Interamerica Committee for Societies for EM. History The IFSM was created in October 1951 by the International Council for Science (ICSU) as the ''Joint Commission for Electron Microscopy''. In July 1955, it became an independent federation following the meeting of national societies representing electron microscopy from the nations of Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, the Netherlands, Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden and Norway), Switzerland and the United States, forming the ''International Federation of Electron Microscope Societies'', with the view of furthering international co-operation between microscopists. Eva Olsson (scientist)
Eva Olsson (born 12 October 1960) is a Swedish physicist who is a professor at Chalmers University of Technology. She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and part of the selection committee for the Nobel Prize in Physics. Early life and education Olsson was an undergraduate student in Gothenburg at the Chalmers University of Technology, where she specialised in engineering physics. She worked on mirror furnaces for her undergraduate diploma. After graduating, she remained at Chalmers and started a doctoral research project studying the interfacial structures of zinc oxide varistor materials. She moved to the United States as a researcher with David R. Clarke at IBM. She returned to the Chalmers University of Technology in 1991, where she was eventually awarded her docent degree. Angus Ian Kirkland FInstP FRSC FRMS (born August 1965) is the JEOL Professor of Electron Microscopy at the Department of Materials, University of Oxford. Professor Kirkland specialises in High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Scanning transmission electron microscopy. Early life and education Kirkland completed a Master of Arts in Natural Sciences, and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge in 1989. Research and career Kirkland continued at Cavendish Laboratory as post-doctoral fellow until he became Senior Research Associate. He was later elected the Ramsay Memorial Trust Research Fellow. Christian Colliex
The French physicist Christian Colliex (b. 1944) is known for his pioneering work on the use of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in transmission electron microscopy. Born in 1944, Colliex graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris in 1965 and received his Ph.D. in Solid State Physics in 1970 from the CNRS Laboratoire de physique des solides, Orsay. He is now CNRS Research Director at the Solid State Physics laboratory in Orsay, head of the Electron Microscopy group. David Cockayne
David John Hugh Cockayne FRS FInstP (19 March 1942 – 22 December 2010) was Professor in the physical examination of materials in the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford and professorial fellow at Linacre College from 2000 to 2009. He was the president of the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy from 2003 till 2007, then vice-president 2007 to 2010. Archie Howie
Archibald "Archie" Howie (born 8 March 1934) is a British physicist and Emeritus Professor at the University of Cambridge, known for his pioneering work on the interpretation of transmission electron microscope images of crystals. Born in 1934, he attended Kirkcaldy High School and the University of Edinburgh. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he subsequently took up a permanent post. He has been a fellow of Churchill College since its foundation, and was President of its Senior Combination Room (SCR) until 2010. In 1965, with Hirsch, Whelan, Pashley and Nicholson, he published the seminal text ''Electron Microscopy of Thin Crystals''. The Nordic Microscopy Society (SCANDEM) is a learned society for the promotion of microscopy in the Nordic countries.
