Intermedia (artists' Association)
Intermedia was a Canadian artists' association active in the late 1960s and early 1970s, based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Intermedia was a loose association of Vancouver artists who worked in a variety of media, collaborated on and staged events. It was founded in 1967 by Jack Shadbolt and Glenn Lewis, among others. At the time of its inception Intermedia aimed to create a centre of community resource in Vancouver where artists, architects, engineers, technologists and educators could come together and explore new models and formats for the purpose of intensifying and expanding the effectiveness of creative sensibility in the community. Helen Goodwin
Helen Goodwin (July 14, 1927 – December 18, 1985) was an English-born, British Columbia-based artist, dancer, teacher, and organizer who specialized in dance and choreography. Goodwin was an active member of Vancouver experimental art community in the 1960s and 1970s, organizing and performing at festivals, exhibitions and artist-run centres. She is best known for co-founding Intermedia and for forming TheCo, a dance troupe. Biography Goodwin was born on July 14, 1927, in England, where she was trained in Laban movement analysis. She moved to Vancouver in 1955. That year, she became a faculty member at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Physical Education Department, and taught stage movement with the Theatre Department. Dennis Vance (artist)
Dennis Vance (18 March 1924 – 6 October 1983) was a British television producer, director, and occasional actor. Born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, he signed up as a Fleet Air Arm pilot during the Second World War. Post-war he began his career as an actor in the late 1940s, appearing in small film parts, such as Poet's Pub, in 1949, before switching to become a producer with BBC Television in the early 1950s. Later, in 1955 he became the first Head of Drama at the ITV contractor ABC Weekend TV, who went on air in 1956, serving the Midlands and the North of England at weekends. He also produced episodes of ''The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel'' (1956), also directing a couple of episodes. Evelyn Roth
Evelyn Roth (born December 27, 1936) is an interdisciplinary artist who has worked in the areas of textiles, sculpture, performance, dance and interactive fabric arts. She specializes in environmentally sensitive events, festivals, school programs and art gallery exhibits. Roth is based in the town of Maslin Beach, on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula. Early life Evelyn Margaret Yakubow was born in 1936 in Mundare, Alberta. She moved to Edmonton, Alberta in the 1950s where she took classes in art, crafts, modern, eastern and classical dance. She also took yoga and fencing classes while working in the local children's library. In 1961, she and her husband Klaus Roth moved to Vancouver where she worked in the university library. Gary Lee-Nova (June 26, 1943), born Gary Nairn, is a Canadian painter, printmaker, sculptor, and filmmaker. Biography In his early art career, Lee-Nova spent 15 months in England as a student at Coventry College (1961–1962) and was introduced by his fellow students and teachers to a wider vision of art-making than was available at art school in Canada at the time. As an adolescent and young adult, Lee-Nova had several hero figures, both writers: the American William S. Burroughs, and the Canadian Marshall McLuhan. He has studied, collected, and corresponded with Burroughs, and sometimes also carried Burroughsian thinking in new directions in his art-making, Lee-Nova has said.
