Institute For Advanced Latin American Studies
The Institute for Advanced Latin American Studies (; IHEAL) is a public research and teaching center at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University dedicated to Latin American studies. It was founded in 1954 by geographer Pierre Monbeig. Description The research axes include: analysis of the contemporary Latin American and North American world; territorial mutations; social actors; cultural, political and juridical transformations in the region. The IHEAL works along with the Center for Research and Documentation on the Americas (CREDA), which depends on the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Sorbonne Nouvelle. From 1956 until 2019, it was located in ''rue Saint-Guillaume'', 7th arrondissement of Paris. Latin American studies (LAS) is an academic and research field associated with the study of Latin America. The interdisciplinary study is a subfield of area studies, and can be composed of numerous disciplines such as economics, sociology, history, international relations, political science, geography, cultural studies, gender studies, and literature. Pierre Monbeig
Pierre Monbeig (15 September 1908 – 22 September 1987) was a French geographer. Biography Firstly Monbeig was professor in the lyceum Malherbe de Caen in 1931. In the year of 1935 he take the position of professor of physical and human Geography in the University of São Paulo (USP), in Brazil. Later he was president of the Brazilian Geographers Association and participate in the Brazilian ''Conselho Nacional de Geografia''. He stayed in São Paulo till 1946. Today the University of São Paulo have a chair with his name for the study of contemporaneous Brazilian Geography. In 1947 he returned to France and researched in French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). After that he taught at the University of Strasbourg, simultaneously with the post in Paris.
