The modern constellation Indus (constellation), Indus is not included in the Three Enclosures and Twenty-Eight Mansions system of traditional Traditional Chinese star names#Categories of Chinese traditional uranography, Chinese uranography because its stars are too far south for observers in China to know about them prior to the introduction of Western star charts. Based on the work of Xu Guangqi and the German Jesuit missionary Johann Adam Schall von Bell in the late Ming Dynasty, this constellation has been classified as one of the 23 Chinese constellations#The Southern Asterisms (近南極星區), Southern Asterisms (近南極星區, ''Jìnnánjíxīngōu'') under the name Chinese constellations#The Southern Asterisms (近南極星區), Persia (波斯, ''Bōsī''). Indus (constellation)
Indus is a constellation in the southern sky first professionally surveyed by Europeans in the 1590s and mapped on a globe by Petrus Plancius by early 1598. It was included on a plate illustrating southern constellations in Johann Bayer, Bayer's sky atlas ''Uranometria'' in 1603. It lies well south of the Tropic of Capricorn but its triangular shape can be seen for most of the year from the Equator. It is elongated from north to south and has a complex boundary. The English translation of its name is generally given as ''the Indian'', though it is unclear which indigenous people the constellation was originally supposed to represent. Features Indus lacks stars among the sky's brightest 100 stars in apparent magnitude. Its brightest stars are two of third magnitude and three of fourth magnitude. HD 205877 is a visual binary star system in the constellation Indus. It also a double lined spectroscopic binary. The components are very similar and both are located on the giant branch in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram in agreement with the F7III spectral type. Beta Indi, Latinized from β Indi, is the second brightest star in the southern constellation of Indus. It is visible to the naked eye as a faint, orange-hued point of light with an apparent visual magnitude of 3.67. The star is located approximately 600 light years from the Sun, based on parallax, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −5 km/s. Epsilon Indi
Epsilon Indi, Latinized from ε Indi, is a star system located at a distance of approximately 12 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation of Indus. The star has an orange hue and is faintly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 4.674. It consists of a K-type main-sequence star, ε Indi A, and two brown dwarfs, ε Indi Ba and ε Indi Bb, in a wide orbit around it. The brown dwarfs were discovered in 2003. ε Indi Ba is an early T dwarf (T1) and ε Indi Bb a late T dwarf (T6) separated by 0.6 arcseconds, with a projected distance of 1460 AU from their primary star. ε Indi A has one known planet, ε Indi Ab, with a mass of 6.31 Jupiter masses in an elliptical orbit with a period of about 171.3 years. ε Indi Ab is the second-closest Jovian exoplanet, after ε Eridani b. Delta Indi, Latinized from δ Indi, is a binary star system in the southern constellation of Indus. It is visible to the naked eye with a combined apparent visual magnitude of +4.40. The brighter primary, designated component A, is magnitude 4.80 while the companion, component B, is magnitude 5.96. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 17.34 mas as measured from Earth, the system is located about 188 light years from the Sun. The binary nature of this system was discovered by South African astronomer William Stephen Finsen from 1936 onward, with his published orbital elements appearing in 1956. The pair have an orbital period of 12.2 years, a semimajor axis of 0.176 arc seconds, and an eccentricity of around 0.03.
