Indigenous People In Video Gaming
Indigenous people have created and collaborated on video games, such as John Romero, co-designer of Doom (1993 video game), ''Doom'', and Allen Turner, who has worked as a designer on a wide range of titles including ''Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse''. Indigenous people have also conveyed their cultures through games, such as Never Alone (video game), ''Never Alone'' and ''Thunderbird Strike''. While many early video games and their iterations which depict Indigenous people misrepresent them and perpetuate negative stereotypes, video games created by Indigenous people enable self-determination. Increasingly, there has been a growth in community organizing around Indigenous games worldwide. Indigenous developers and their video games have been featured in exhibitions including the DIGITAL MEDIA ART+CADE as part of imagineNATIVE, ''Memories of the Future/Souvenirs du futur'' at SAW Video Media Art Centre, and ''REGENERATION: Breaking Time with Indigenous Video Games'' at t ... Indigenous People
Indigenous peoples are culturally distinct ethnic groups whose members are directly descended from the earliest known inhabitants of a particular geographic region and, to some extent, maintain the language and culture of those original peoples. The term ''Indigenous'' was first, in its modern context, used by Europeans, who used it to differentiate the Indigenous peoples of the Americas from the Europeans, European settlers of the Americas and from the African diaspora, Sub-Saharan Africans who were brought to the Americas as Slavery, enslaved people. The term may have first been used in this context by Thomas Browne, Sir Thomas Browne in 1646, who stated "and although in many parts thereof there be at present swarms of ''Negroes'' serving under the ''Spaniard'', yet were they all transported from ''Africa'', since the discovery of ''Columbus''; and are not indigenous or proper natives of ''America''." Peoples are usually described as "Indigenous" when they maintain traditions ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Indigenous Futurisms
Indigenous Futurisms is a movement consisting of art, literature, comics, games, and other forms of media which express Indigenous perspectives of the future, past, and present in the context of science fiction and related sub-genres. Such perspectives may reflect Indigenous ways of knowing, traditional stories, historical or contemporary politics, and cultural realities. Background In the anthology, ''Walking the Clouds: An Anthology of Indigenous Science Fiction'', Dillon outlines how science-fiction can aid processes of decolonization. Using tools like slipstream, worldbuilding, science fiction and anthropological First Contact scenarios, Indigenous communities construct self-determined representations and alternative narratives about their identities and futures. Indigenous Futurists critique the exclusion of Indigenous people from the contemporary world and challenge notions of what constitutes advanced technology. Race And Video Games
The relationship between race and video games has received substantial academic and journalistic attention. Games offer opportunities for players to explore, practice, and re-enforce cultural and social identities. Because of the multifaceted cultural implications of video games, there may be issues of race involved in the player base, the creative process, or within the game's universe. Video games predominantly created and played by one racial group can unintentionally perpetuate racial stereotypes and limit players' choices to preconceived notions of racial bias, and issues of representation and harassment may arise in the industry and the player community. Race and video game players Demographics of video game players While research has shown the stereotypical image of a "gamer" to be a white male, the reality of the situation is much more diverse. Gaming's popularity among communities of color changed significantly over a short period of time: while a 2009 study found tha ...
