''Indie 2000'' was a series of alternative music compilations that enjoyed moderate success in Australia throughout the latter half of the 1990s. There were a total of nine volumes. The title was changed to simply ''Indie'' for volumes 8 and 9. The compilations consisted of popular alternative songs, a considerable amount of them being by Australian bands. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Alternative rock acts achieved mainstream success in the 1990s with the likes of the grunge, shoegaze, and Britpop subgenres in the United States and United Kingdom, respectively. During this period, many record labels were looking for "alternatives", as many corporate rock, hard rock, and glam metal acts from the 1980s were beginning to grow stale throughout the music industry. The emergence of Generation X as a cultural force in the 1990s also contributed greatly to the rise of alternative rock. "Alternative" refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream or commercial rock or pop. Jebediah
Jebediah are an Australian alternative rock band formed in 1994 in Perth, Western Australia. They were formed by Chris Daymond on lead guitar, Kevin Mitchell (aka Bob Evans) on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Vanessa Thornton on bass guitar. They were joined a year later by Kevin's older brother, Brett Mitchell, on drums. After winning the National Campus Band Competition, the group were brought to national attention when their 1996 single "Jerks of Attention" received heavy airplay on Australian alternative radio station Triple J – which was followed by their breakthrough debut album, ''Slightly Odway'' (8 September 1997). Something for Kate are an Australian alternative rock band, which formed in 1994 with Paul Dempsey on lead vocals and guitar, and Clint Hyndman on drums. They were joined in 1998 by Stephanie Ashworth on bass guitar and backing vocals. The group have released seven studio albums: both ''The Official Fiction'' (2003) and ''Desert Lights'' (2006) topped the ARIA Albums Chart; while '' Beautiful Sharks'' (1999), ''Echolalia'' (2001) and '' Leave Your Soul to Science'' (2012) reached the top 10. The Meanies are an Australian punk rock band formed in 1988 by D.D. Meanie (a.k.a. Dennis DePianto) on lead guitar, Link Meanie (a.k.a. Lindsay McLennan) on vocals and guitar, Ringo Meanie (a.k.a. Ammonia (band)
Ammonia was an alternative rock band from Australia which made a name for itself in the 1990s, producing a mixture of grunge and guitar pop (a sound they described as "pop-metal"). The group began in 1992, initially comprising guitarist Dave Johnstone (ex-Hideous Goldsteins), drummer Alan Balmont (ex-Dear Octopus, Cherrytones) and bass guitar player Phil Natt. This line-up performed under the name Fuzzswirl and, following the departure of Natt, they continued to perform with a variety of bass guitar players around their hometown of Perth. "Drugs" is a song by Ammonia, released as their debut single from their debut album '' Mint 400'' in 1995. The song was an instant hit and is still regarded as one of the band's most recognised songs. Lead singer Dave Johnstone is quoted as saying, "There isn't really that much of a message. Skunkhour are an Australian funk rock band that were formed in Sydney in 1991. "Fire Water Burn" is a song by American rock band Bloodhound Gang, released as the first single from their second album, ''One Fierce Beer Coaster'' (1996). The chorus of the song is derived from "The Roof Is on Fire" by Rock Master Scott & the Dynamic Three, yet sung considerably slower. The song was remixed for the CD single by God Lives Underwater. The Prodigy
The Prodigy are an English electronic dance music band formed in Braintree, Essex, in 1990 by producer, keyboard player and songwriter Liam Howlett. The original line-up also featured dancer and singer Keith Flint and dancer and occasional live keyboard player Leeroy Thornhill, dancer Sharky and Rapping, MC and vocalist Maxim (musician), Maxim. They were pioneers of the breakbeat hardcore, breakbeat-influenced genre big beat, and achieved mainstream popularity in the 1990s.
