Indians In Lebanon
There is a small but recognisable community of Indians in Lebanon consisting of labourers and engineers mainly working in the industrial sector; some have opened their own businesses. The Indian migrants work in sectors of the Lebanese economy such as construction, manufacturing and the service sector. In 2006, the Indian population in Lebanon declined due to the Israel-Hezbollah War. The evacuees were first brought by Indian naval ships from the Lebanese capital of Beirut to Larnaca in Cyprus and then flown to India, under an Indian military-coordinated exercise called " Operation Sukoon." Sri Lankans in Lebanon refer to people from Sri Lanka living in Lebanon. There are approximately 80,000 to 90,000 of them. Sri Lankans generally go to the Middle East to find work, with a large domestic labour population in Lebanon. History A large influx of Sri Lankan women into Lebanon had begun in the early 1990s, serving primarily as domestic labour in private households. Like other countries the Sri Lankan government has actively encouraged the 'export' of domestic labour as it has become the largest single source of foreign revenue for the country. However recently most Sri Lankan domestic workers have fallen under the category of 'contract slavery', given the legal and employment conditions they face. There are Hindu communities, mostly of Indian, Nepalese and Sri Lankan heritage in Arab states of the Persian Gulf. Many came due to the migration of Indians and Nepalese expatriates and employees to the area around the Persian Gulf. Hindu temples have been built in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Oman. Demographics Egypt There were about 2,700 Hindus in Egypt in 2010. That number decreased to about 1535 in 2020. There are no known Hindu temples in Egypt. Oman Oman has an immigrant Hindu minority. The number of Hindus has declined in the 20th century although it is now stable. Hinduism first came to Muscat in 1507 from Kutch. The original Hindus spoke Kutchi. By the early 19th century there were at least 4,000 Hindus in Oman, all of the intermediate merchant caste. The Lebanese Republic and the Republic of India established diplomatic relations in 1954. Lebanon maintains an embassy in New Delhi, while India maintains one in Beirut. Modern Relations The fact that India kept its embassy in Beirut open and functioning throughout the Lebanese civil war from 1975 to 1990 (closing very briefly from 5 August to 16 October 1989), in contrast to the embassies of a large number of other countries, was greatly appreciated by Lebanon. Indian Battalion (INDBATT) have been deployed in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) since November 1998. Operation Sukoon
Operation Sukoon (Hindi, lit ''relief'') was an operation launched by the Indian Navy to evacuate Indian, Sri Lankan and Nepalese nationals, as well as Lebanese nationals with Indian spouses, from the conflict zone during the 2006 Lebanon War. The Indian Armed Forces also launched a similar effort, Operation Safe Homecoming, to bring Indian nationals from Libya during the 2011 Libyan civil war.
