Indian Locomotive Class YCG-1
The YCG-1 was a class of electric locomotives built in the 1930s for use on the metre-gauge electrified lines in the Chennai area. The name stands for (Y)metre gauge, (C)DC electric, (G)goods. With the conversion of the lines to 25 kv AC, all were withdrawn. One is preserved at National Rail Museum, New Delhi, National Rail Museum in New Delhi. History Four Bo-Bo locomotives were supplied by English Electric in 1930 for goods traffic on the South Indian Railway's Madras to Tambaram suburban line recently electrified at 1.5 kV DC overhead, and were later withdrawn when the succeeding Southern Railway zone, Southern Railway switched to AC traction. One is now preserved at the NRM (#21900). National Rail Museum, New Delhi
The National Rail Museum in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, displays exhibits on the history of rail transport in India. The museum was inaugurated on 1 February 1977. The museum spans over an area of over and the indoor gallery comprises an octagonal building which houses six display galleries and a large open area is laid out to simulate the atmosphere of a railway yard. It is open every day except Mondays and national holidays. History A ''Transport Museum'' was first proposed in 1962, under the advice of rail enthusiast Michael Graham Satow. Boxcab
A boxcab, in railroad terminology, is a term for an electric locomotive in which the machinery and cab (locomotive), crew areas were enclosed in a box-like superstructure. Deriving from "boxcar", the term mainly occurs in North America. The term has rarely been applied to diesel locomotives. It was also applied in Australia to Victorian Railways' Victorian Railways E class (electric)#Design modification, "E" class second series electric locomotives. The Indian locomotive class YAM-1 is a class of metre gauge (Y), Alternating Current (A), mixed traffic (M) electric locomotives in India. Twenty were built in 1964–66 by a Japanese consortium led by Mitsubishi. Background When the Madras (now Chennai) to Tambaram line was electrified in 1931, the 1500 V DC system was originally used. As part of an extension of the electrification to Villupuram in 1965, the whole section was converted to the 25 kV AC system. Eighteen YAM-1 locomotives (later extended to 20), and YAU-1 4-car electric multiple units were built for service on the network. Indian Locomotive Class WCG-1
The Indian locomotive class WCG-1 (originally classified as EF/1) is a class of 1.5 kV DC freight-hauling electric locomotives that were developed in the late 1920s by Vulcan Foundry and Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. A total of 41 WCG-1 locomotives were built in England between 1928 and 1929. The WCG-1s served for nearly 70 years and were withdrawn by the early 2000s, with two of the locomotives being preserved, while the rest of the units being scrapped. History The electrification of the line from Kalyan to Pune and Igatpuri in the 1920s required powerful electric locomotives to handle trains over the 1 in 37 grade.
