India Davis Cup Team
The India men's national tennis team represents India in Davis Cup tennis competition and are governed by the All India Tennis Association. India competed in its first Davis Cup in 1921. India finished as runners-up 3 times (1966, 1974, 1987), the most by any nation from Asia proper. In 1974, the final was scratched and South Africa were awarded the Davis Cup after India refused to participate in the final due to the South African government's apartheid policies. India were strong favorites to win with Vijay Amritraj and Anand Amritraj at their best. Only Romania and India have contested more than one final without being crowned champion. Mahesh Bhupathi
Mahesh Shrinivas Bhupathi (born 7 June 1974) is an Indian former doubles world No. 1 tennis player. In 1997, he became the first Indian to win a major tournament (with Rika Hiraki). With his win at the 2006 Australian Open mixed doubles, he joined the elite group of eight tennis players who have achieved a career Grand Slam in mixed doubles. He is also the founder of International Premier Tennis League. In December 2016, Bhupathi was appointed as India's next non-playing Davis Cup captain and took over the reins from Anand Amritraj in February 2017. Harsh Mankad
Harsh Mankad (born 10 November 1979) is a former world ranked ATP Professional tennis player from India. He played Davis Cup for India between 2001–2010 and was the No. 1 singles player on the team for several of those years. Personal life He is the grandson of world-renowned cricketer Vinoo Mankad, and the son of Indian Test cricketer and Mumbai captain Ashok Mankad and pioneer women's tennis player Nirupama Vasant. Harsh resides in Minneapolis. Early career Mankad was the #1 ranked junior tennis player in India, winning National Titles in every age group. Premjit Lall
Premjit Lall (20 October 1940 – 31 December 2008) was an Indian professional tennis player from Kolkata, who was active during the 1960s and 70s. Tennis career Lall started his tennis career on the grass courts of the Calcutta South Club where he was coached by Dilip Bose. Together with Jaidip Mukerjea and Ramanathan Krishnan they were called the Three Musketeers of Indian tennis. Lall was a runner-up at the Boyss Singles event at the 1958 Wimbledon Championships, losing the final to Butch Buchholz. At the 1969 Wimbledon Championships Lall nearly caused a significant upset when he was leading first-seeded and world No. 1 Rod Laver by two sets to love in the second round but ultimately lost in five sets to Laver, who went on to win the title and his second Grand Slam. Naresh Kumar (tennis Player)
Naresh Kumar (; ) (22 December 1928 – 14 September 2022) was an Indian tennis player. He was the playing captain of the India Davis Cup team from 1955 to 1960. He was the non-playing captain of the India Davis Cup team from 1989 to 1993. Early life Kumar was born in Lahore, Punjab, British India on 22 December 1928. Playing career Kumar played his first tournament at the 1949 Indian International Championships and reached the semi-finals. In the spring of 1949, he reached the final of the Northern Championships in England before losing to Tony Mottram. Later that year, he lost to George Worthington in the final of the East of England Championships. Ramesh Krishnan
Ramesh Krishnan (born 5 June 1961) is an Indian tennis coach and former professional tennis player. As a junior player in the late 1970s, he won the singles titles at both, Wimbledon and the French Open. He went on to reach three Grand Slam quarterfinals in the 1980s and was a part of the Indian team captained by Vijay Amritraj which reached the final of the Davis Cup in 1987 against Sweden. Krishnan also beat then-world No. 1, Mats Wilander, at the 1989 Australian Open. He became India's Davis Cup captain in 2007. Hassan Ali Fyzee
Hassan-Ali Fyzee (9 October 1879 – 1 January 1962) was an Indian tennis, badminton, and table tennis player. Table tennis Hassan-Ali Fyzee took part in the first 1926 World Table Tennis Championships in London. Here he won the bronze medal with the Indian men's team, in which also his brother Athar-Ali Fyzee, active in the Davis Cup, played. In 1926, he was president of the Table Tennis Federation of India. Somdev Kishore Devvarman (born 13 February 1985) is an Indian former professional tennis player. He is known for being one of the few collegiate player to have made three consecutive finals at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship, NCAA, winning back-to-back finals in his junior and senior years at the University of Virginia. Only three other players have matched that record since 1950. His 44–1 win–loss record in 2008 at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship was the best record since 1971. Akhtar Ali (Urdu: اختر علی) (5 July 1939 – 7 February 2021), was an Indian tennis player. He was a member of the Indian Davis Cup team continuously from 1958 to 1964 and captain of Indian Davis Cup in 2008. Career He played his first known singles tournament in 1956 at the Rothmans Invitation at Eastbourne.
