Alphabetical index of articles about the Yazidis, and their history and culture. The Yazidis are a ethnoreligious group, Sub-ethnic group of Kurds found chiefly in Iraqi Kurdistan. Their religion, Yazidism, blends ancient Mesopotamian beliefs with aspects of Islam and Christianity. Throughout history, the Yazidis have experienced numerous persecutions and discrimination, including genocides committed by the Ottoman Empire and the Islamic State group. Due to these events, many Yazidis have been displaced, and the community continues to face many struggles. Yazidis, also spelled Yezidis (; ), are a Kurdish languages, Kurdish-speaking Endogamy, endogamous religious group indigenous to Kurdistan, a geographical region in Western Asia that includes parts of Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. The majority of Yazidis remaining in the Middle East today live in Iraq, primarily in the Governorates of Iraq, governorates of Nineveh Governorate, Nineveh and Duhok Governorate, Duhok. There is a disagreement among scholars and in Yazidi circles on whether the Yazidi people are a distinct ethnoreligious group or a religious sub-group of the Kurds, an Iranian peoples, Iranic ethnic group. Ain Sifni
Ain Sifni (, , ) also known as Shekhan (), is a town and subdistrict in Nineveh Governorate, Iraq. It is located in the Shekhan District in the Nineveh Plains. Ain Sifni is largely populated by Yazidis, most of whom speak Kurmanji Kurdish. In the town, there is a Chaldean Catholic church of Mar Yousif, and a church of Mar Gewargis of the Ancient Church of the East. There are also seven Yazidi religious monuments, including mausoleums of Sheikh ‘Alî Chamse and Sheikh Hantuch, and shrines of Sheikh Adi, Nishingaha Peroz, and Sheikh Mushelleh. Etymology The Kurdish name of the town is derived from the plural form of "sheikh" ("holy man" in Kurdish), and thus translates to " he land of theholy men". According to Yazidi tradition, Shekhan means "two sheikhs" and referred to the first time that Abdulqadir Gilani, founder of Qadiriyya, and Adi ibn Musafir, founder of Adawiyya, had met, which was on the site of what later became Shekhan. Arab Shamilov
Arab Shamilov (, also known as ; 23 January 1897 – 1978) was a Kurdish novelist and scholar who lived in the Soviet Union. Early career Arab Shamilov was born on 23 January 1897 in the village of Susuz in the Kars oblast, now located in eastern Turkey but then part of the Russian Empire. During World War I, from 1914 to 1917, he served as an interpreter for the Russian army. Later on, he became a member of the central committee of the Armenian Communist Party. In 1931, he began working on Kurdish literature at the Leningrad Institute of Oriental Studies. He assisted in developing a Latin-based alphabet for the Kurdish language in 1927. He became a member of the editorial board of the Kurdish newspaper '' Ria Taza'' (''The New Path''), published in Yerevan from 1930 to 1937. April 2007 Yazidi Massacre
The April 2007 Yazidi massacre was a massacre of Yazidis that took place on April 22, 2007, in Mosul, in northern Iraq. Massacre At around 2PM (GMT+3), a bus carrying workers from the Mosul Textile Factory en route to Bashiqa, Al-Hamdaniya District was stopped by cars owned by unidentified attackers. With the bus now stationary, the attackers got on, and checked the passengers' identity cards. According to Iraqi police, after checking their identification, the armed gunmen told the Muslim and Christian passengers to get off the bus. They then drove the bus to eastern Mosul with 23 remaining passengers, all Yazidis, where the hostages were made to lie face down in front of a wall and shot, execution-style. Amirkhan Alikovich Mori (born November 13, 1961, Tbilisi, Georgia) is a Georgian entrepreneur, Chairman of the Board at Regions Group. Mori is a Kurd–Yazidi. Biography Amirkhan Mori graduated from the Moscow State University of Environmental Engineering with a degree in Economics and Management in 2003. He did his military service in the Soviet Army, Soviet Armed Forces from 1984 to 1986. Amirkhan Mori joined the workforce in 1978, first as an office worker at the Distributed Control System of the Retail Management Department of Tbilisi, and then as a technology specialist at the Research Institute for Stable Isotopes, also in Tbilisi, Georgia. Ali Atalan (born 5 January 1968) is a Kurdish-German politician of Yazidi faith. He is a former member of the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia with Die Linke in Germany, and the Turkish Parliament with the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Early life and education Ali Atalan grew up in a Kurds-Yazidis family and came to Germany in 1985. After completing his Abitur in 1997, he studied political science and sociology at the Ruhr University Bochum, where he graduated in 2004 with a Diplom in social science.
