In The Time Of The Butterflies (film)
''In the Time of the Butterflies'' is a 2001 feature film, produced for the Showtime television network, directed by Mariano Barroso and based on Julia Álvarez's book of the same name. The story is a fictionalized account of the lives of the Mirabal sisters, Dominican revolutionary activists, who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and were assassinated on November 25, 1960. In the film, Salma Hayek played one of the sisters, Minerva, and Edward James Olmos plays Trujillo. Marc Anthony has a minor role as Minerva's first love, and the impetus for her later revolutionary activities. Plot The film begins with pictures and video of the actual victims of Trujillo. Mariano Barroso (born 26 December 1959) is a Spanish film director and screenwriter. He has directed more than 20 films since 1982. His 1996 film '' Éxtasis'' was entered into the 46th Berlin International Film Festival. Since 9 June 2018, he has been the President of the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. Mirabal Sisters
The Mirabal sisters ( ) were four sisters from the Dominican Republic, three of whom (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo () and were involved in activities against his regime. The three sisters were assassinated on 25 November 1960. The last sister, Adela (known as Dedé), who was not involved in political activities at the time, died of natural causes on 1 February 2014. Of the sisters, Minerva was the one who had the most active role in politics. She and her husband founded the 14 June Revolutionary Movement. Maria Teresa also became involved in the Movement. ''In the Time of the Butterflies'' is a historical fiction novel by Julia Alvarez, relating a fictionalized account of the Mirabal sisters during the time of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. The book is written in the first and third person, by and about the Mirabal sisters, who called themselves the "Butterflies," after Minerva Mirabal's code name. First published in 1994, the story was adapted into a feature film in 2001. Characters Minerva: The third Mirabal sister, and certainly the most headstrong.
