''In the Spirit of Things'' is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Kansas, released in 1988 (see 1988 in music). It is a very loosely organized concept album, telling the story of a flood hitting the real Kansas city of Neosho Falls in 1951. It was the first Kansas album since 1975's ''Masque'' to lack a hit single. History According to the author Dan Fitzgerald, Rich Williams was inspired to create this album after having read the book ''Ghost Towns of Kansas, Volume II'' (1979), specifically the chapter on Neosho Falls. The album is Kansas's last studio effort for a major label. It didn't receive much promotion, as MCA Records dropped a slew of "older" artists shortly after its release and famously switched its attention to current younger acts such as Tiffany. Steve Morse
Steve J. Morse (born July 28, 1954) is an American guitarist and songwriter. A seven-time Grammy nominee, he is best known as the founder of the Dixie Dregs and as the longest serving guitarist for Deep Purple. Morse also enjoyed a successful solo career and was a member of the group Kansas in the mid-1980s. Most recently, Morse became a member of the supergroup Flying Colors. Early life and education Steve Morse was born in Hamilton, Ohio. His family soon moved to Tennessee and then to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where Morse spent his childhood. Although familiar with piano and clarinet, Morse ultimately became a guitarist. Morse worked briefly with his older brother Dave in a band called the Plague until the family moved to Augusta, Georgia. Steve Walsh (musician)
Steve Walsh (born June 15, 1951) is an American singer, musician and songwriter, best known for his work as a longtime member of the progressive rock band Kansas. He retired from the band in 2014. He sings lead on four of Kansas' best-known hits: " Carry On Wayward Son", " Dust in the Wind", " Point of Know Return", and " All I Wanted", the last two of which he co-wrote. Career Walsh was in a number of local Topeka groups prior to his joining Kansas, most notably the group White Clover that had reformed after its members had been in 2 earlier bands named Kansas that had split up. White Clover was signed to Don Kirshner's label and the band reverted to the name Kansas (the 3rd line up under this name). ''King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Kansas'' is the third live album from American rock band Kansas, released in 1998 (see 1998 in music). In the UK it was released as ''Live on the King Biscuit Flower Hour'', and in 2003 it was re-released as ''Greatest Hits Live'' (see below). The album was recorded on February 14, 1989, at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia during their ''In the Spirit of Things'' tour and featured performances by Steve Walsh and Steve Morse. Two tracks from the original performance were omitted from the release: " Play the Game Tonight" and a cover of " Born to Be Wild." The liner notes include an extensive essay describing this era of the band and the circumstances surrounding the album and tour supporting it during which this show was recorded. The ''King Biscuit Flower Hour'' was an American syndicated radio show presented by the D.I.R. Radio Network that featured concert performances by various rock music recording artists. History The program was broadcast on Sunday nights from 1973 until 1993. Following the end of original programming, the program continued, featuring material from previously broadcast shows, until 2005. During its prime, the program was carried by more than 300 radio stations throughout the United States. Tiffany Renee Darwish (born October 2, 1971), known mononymously as Tiffany, is an American pop singer. Her 1987 cover of the Tommy James and the Shondells song " I Think We're Alone Now" spent two weeks at No. 1 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart, and was released as the second single from her debut studio album '' Tiffany''. Neosho Falls is a city in Woodson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 134. History Neosho Falls was founded in 1857, making it the oldest town and first county seat in Woodson County. It was named from the Neosho River, on which it is situated. The first post office in Neosho Falls was established in May 1857. Neosho Falls was originally platted and extensively improved by a company led by Benjamin F. Goss and his brother N. S. Goss, who would later organize a company of cavalry in the area to fight for the Union in the Civil War.
