''In Hollywood with Potash and Perlmutter'' is a 1924 American silent comedy film, produced by Samuel Goldwyn, released through Associated First National Pictures, and directed by Alfred E. Green. A sequel of sorts, the Jewish ethnic comedy characters of Potash and Perlmutter return from their 1923 debut film, also produced by Goldwyn, but with a different actor for Potash. The films were based on ''Potash and Perlmutter'' a play by Charles Klein and Montague Glass which opened on Broadway in 1913 and ran for 441 performances. This sequel also adapted the play ''Business Before Pleasure'' by Montague Glass and Jules Eckert Goodman which opened in 1917 for 357 performances. Alexander Carr returned for his role as Perlmutter but his longtime partner from the Broadway plays and the 1923 movie, Barney Bernard, died in March 1924, before this film got underway. Vera Pogorelsky Gordon (June 11, 1886 – May 8, 1948) was a Russian-born American stage and screen actress. Early life Vera Pogorelsky was born in Ekaterinoslav, Russia, on June 11, 1886, the daughter of Boris Pogorelsky and Teigan Nemirovsky. She emigrated with her family to the United States when she was seven. Career Pogorelsky was a child actor but she was fired by the directors of the Shevchenko Imperial Company when they learned she was of Jewish heritage. After emigrating to the United States, Pogorelsky, now Gordon, appeared in smaller theater like the Liberty and the Lyric in New York’s Lower East Side. Early life Talmadge was born on April 19, 1898 in Brooklyn, New York, to poor parents, Margaret L. "Peg" and Frederick O. Talmadge. Cyril Ring (December 5, 1892July 17, 1967) was an American film actor. He began his career in silent films in 1921. By the time of his final performance in 1951, he had appeared in over 350 films, nearly all of them in small and/or uncredited bit parts. Ring is probably best known today for his role as Harvey Yates, a con artist and accomplice to fellow con artist Penelope, played by Kay Francis in the Marx Brothers first film ''The Cocoanuts'' (1929). He also appeared in uncredited small parts in two other Marx films, '' Monkey Business'' (1931) and '' A Day at the Races'' (1937). William Louis Payne (January 13, 1873 – August 14, 1953) was an American character actor of the silent and sound film eras, as well as legitimate theater. Biography Born in Pennsylvania, Payne's acting life began in the first decade of the 1900s, when he appeared in the Broadway play, ''Her Majesty, the Girl Queen of Nordenmark'', which ran at the Manhattan Theatre in 1900. In 1903 he played Nathaniel Winkle in ''Mr. Pickwick'' at the Herald Square Theatre and later the Grand Opera House. Charles Meredith (August 27, 1894 – November 28, 1964) was an American film and television actor. Biography Meredith was born in Knoxville, Pennsylvania. He was a popular silent film leading man and played opposite such actresses as Blanche Sweet, Mary Miles Minter, Florence Vidor, and others in romantic drama and comedy films. In 1924, he left his film career for work on the stage. He returned to film in 1947 where he played a number of small character roles. Toward the end of his career, he turned to television as well, notably as Secretary Drake in the ''Rocky Jones, Space Ranger'' (1954) series. He also appeared in three episodes of ''The Lone Ranger'', each time as a doctor, including the "Cannonball McKay" (1949) episode (1/16) as Doc Tate.
