The Illinois State Redbirds baseball team is the varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Illinois State University in Normal, IL. The team competes at the Division I level of the NCAA and is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. History The program's first year of competition was 1890. Howard Hancock
Howard Joseph Hancock (December 20, 1894 – February 12, 1978) was an American football and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Oshkosh State Normal School—now known as the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1930 and at Illinois State Normal University—now known as Illinois State University—in Normal, Illinois, from 1931 until 1944, and compiling a career college football coaching record of 95–65–29. Hancock was the head baseball coach at Illinois State from 1933 to 1946, tallying a mark of 120–112–2, and also coached golf at the school. He was the athletic director at Oshkosh State from 1921 to 1931 and Illinois State from 1931 to 1961. Hancock Stadium, the home venue for the Illinois State Redbirds football team is named for him. David Bruce Bergman (June 6, 1953 – February 2, 2015) was an American Major League Baseball first baseman, designated hitter and left fielder who played between 1975 and 1992. Early life Born in Evanston, Illinois, Bergman was an alumnus of Maine South High School and Illinois State University. In 1973 and 1974, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League, and won the league batting title in 1973. His uniform number 12 was retired at Illinois State in 1994. Playing career Bergman was drafted by the Chicago Cubs out of high school, but opted to pursue a college degree rather than sign with his favorite team.
