Il Gabbiano
''Il gabbiano'' (; i.e. "The seagull") is a 1977 Italian drama film written and directed by Marco Bellocchio. It is loosely based on the Anton Chekhov's drama play ''The Seagull''. The film was screened out of competition at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival. For her performance Pamela Villoresi won a Grolla d'oro. Plot A young writer finds himself trapped between his mother (Laura Betti), a horrible actress, and the knowledge that he has only mediocre talent as a playwright and almost no character. After the young man suffers the loss of his mistress at the hands of his stepfather, also a novelist, his self-esteem is so shattered that he commits suicide. Marco Bellocchio
Marco Bellocchio (; born 9 November 1939) is an Italian film director, screenwriter, and actor. Life and career Born in Bobbio, near Piacenza, Marco Bellocchio had a strict Catholic upbringing – his father was a lawyer, his mother a schoolteacher. He began studying philosophy in Milan but then decided to enter film school, first at the Dramatic Art Academy of Milan, then the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, and later at thSlade School of Fine Artin London. His first film, ''Fists in the Pocket'' (''I pugni in tasca'', winner of the Silver Sail at the 1965 Festival del film Locarno), was funded by family members and shot on family property in 1965. Remo Remotti
Remo Remotti (16 November 1924 – 21 June 2015) was an Italian actor, playwright, artist and poet. Life and career Born in Rome, Remotti lost his father at 12 years old, then after graduating in Law he moved to Peru, where he attended an art school and began painting. Following the bankruptcy of the taxi company he had founded in Peru, seven years later he returned to Italy where he married Maria Luisa Loy, the sister of the director and screenwriter Nanni Loy, and started an activity as a playwright, often also directing and acting his comedy plays. He was later requested by some theatrical companies for character roles, and in the late 1970s he began a proficuous film career as a character actor. A painter and a sculptor, some of his works are exhibited at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna. He was also a composer of poems, usually sonnets in Roman dialect.
