Arthur Robert Smith (23 January 1933 – 3 February 1975) was a Scotland international rugby union player. He played as a Wing. Rugby Union career Amateur career Originally from Castle Douglas in Kirkcudbrightshire in Scotland, he graduated in mathematics at Glasgow University and then gained a PhD at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. President Of The Scottish Rugby Union
The president of the Scottish Rugby Union is the figurehead of rugby union in Scotland. Origin In 1873, and directly after the Scotland versus England international match, representatives from eight Scottish rugby union sides came together in Glasgow at the Glasgow Academy in Elmbank Street. They decided to form an organisation to develop the sport in Scotland. It was initially called the Scottish Football Union, but changed its name to the Scottish Rugby Union to give clarity from association football. They had a number of initial aims:- to help promote a cup competition; to bring closer working between the Scottish clubs; and to form a committee so that the Scotland international team could be picked. Scottish Exiles is a rugby union representative team featuring players selected from the Scottish diaspora. Hennie Van Zyl
Hendrik Jacobus van Zyl (born 31 January 1936) is a South African former rugby union international. Born on a farm outside of Ventersdorp, van Zyl learnt his rugby while in boarding school. He was a winger known for his long strides and made his provincial debut for Transvaal in 1959. Van Zyl was capped in 10 Tests for the Springboks, scoring two tries on debut to help them to a win over New Zealand at Ellis Park in 1960. On the 1960–61 tour of Europe, van Zyl played in three of the Tests, before having to return home as his father had been killed in a lightning strike. He scored a hat-trick against Australia in his second last Test match. In 1962, van Zyl left the Springboks to play rugby league. John Gainsford
John Leslie Gainsford (August 4, 1938 – November 18, 2015) was a South African rugby union player (Springbok number 348). He was born in Germiston. Gainsford played in 71 matches for South Africa (the Springboks), including tour games, and was known for being the most-capped Springbok centre until his record was overtaken by Japie Mulder in 2001. Early life Gainsford grew up in Lansdowne, Cape Town. He was the eldest of four children. His mother, Enid Francis Gainsford, was Australian. She was a former Sydney swimming champion who came out to South Africa with her mother, when her mother was sent to South Africa to help train women factory workers for the Second World War effort. It was during this time that she met his South African father, John Cecil Gainsford, and made South Africa her permanent home. Ian Kirkpatrick
Ian Andrew Kirkpatrick (born 24 May 1946) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. Described as "supremely athletic, fast, fearless and with an uncanny sense of anticipation", Kirkpatrick is widely regarded as one of the greatest flankers to have ever played the game. His try-scoring ability was astonishing; at the time Kirkpatrick played rugby, it was rare for forwards to score tries, but his 16 test tries were an All Black record until Stu Wilson surpassed it in 1983. George Stevenson (30 May 1933 – 24 June 2012) was a Scotland international rugby union player. He played as a Centre, but could also cover Wing. Rugby Union career Amateur career Stevenson started playing rugby union with Hawick PSA and then moved to Hawick Linden. From Linden, Stevenson then played for Hawick. His Hawick team-mate Hugh McLeod said this of Stevenson: "He was a like car. He had gears and he would move into top gear when he thought it was necessary. He was never happy touching the ball down in the corner. He would always want to touch down under the posts. He was such a character." Provincial career He played for South of Scotland District. Eddie McKeating (1 September 1936 – 2 May 2021) was a Scotland international rugby union player. Rugby Union career Amateur career McKeating played for Heriots. His first match for the 1st XV at the Edinburgh club was at emergency cover at scrum-half, when he was only 15. He was playing as a centre with the 3rd XV when he was promoted. He was injured in that first 1st XV match, and he had to get his spleen removed. He moved to England where he completed his National Service. He played for London Scottish and the military Combined Services team when there. On his return to Edinburgh he resumed playing for Heriots. With Heriots he won the Melrose Sevens in 1957 and 1958. He later moved to play for West of Scotland when he was promoted by William Thyne & Co. While with West of Scotland, they shared the Scottish Unofficial Championship of 1964-65.
