Iain Hamilton (journalist)
Iain Bertram Hamilton (3 February 1920 – 15 July 1986) was a Scottish journalist, author and poet. Hamilton was educated at Paisley Grammar School, and initially worked as a reporter on the '' Daily Record'' in Glasgow before heading south to London to work as on the staff of ''The Guardian''. From 1952, he was associated with the weekly journal ''The Spectator'', and after several promotions through the ranks he was appointed Editor in 1962, staying in that position for a year. He was Editorial Director of the Hutchinson group of publishing companies from 1958 to 1962, and after leaving ''The Spectator'' became managing director of Kern House Enterprises (1970–5). He was Director of Studies at the Institute for the Study of Conflict, London, during 1975-1977. In addition, he wrote a good many articles for the ''Illustrated London News'' and the high-brow current affairs magazine '' Encounter''. Iain Hamilton (composer)
Iain Ellis Hamilton (6 June 1922 – 21 July 2000) was a prolific Scottish composer of ten operas, four symphonies, four string quartets and much more. He worked in the United States for twenty years. Career Hamilton was born in Glasgow and educated in London, where he became an apprentice engineer. He remained in that profession for the next seven years, studying music in his spare time. In 1947 he won a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Music for three years, studying composition with William Alwyn and piano with Harold Craxton. Simultaneously he earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of London (1950), and he was later awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of Glasgow (1970).Ruth C. Iain Douglas-Hamilton
Iain Douglas-Hamilton (born 16 August 1942) is a Scottish zoologist from Oxford University and one of the world's foremost authorities on the African elephant. In 1993, he founded Save the Elephants, which is dedicated to securing a future for elephants and their habitats. Douglas-Hamilton pioneered the first in-depth scientific study of elephant social behaviour in Tanzania's Lake Manyara National Park, aged 23. His work in the 1960s paved the way for much of today’s understanding of elephants and current conservation practices. During the 1970s, he investigated the status of elephants throughout Africa and was the first to alert the world to the ivory poaching holocaust, bringing about the first global ivory trade ban in 1989. For his work on elephants he was awarded two of conservation's highest awards - the Order of the Golden Ark in 1988, the Order of the British Empire in 1992, and the Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2015.
