''I Can't Stand the Rain'' is the fourth studio album by American Memphis soul singer Ann Peebles. It was released on the Hi label in 1974 and was her highest-charting record on the ''Billboard'' 200, where it reached no. 155 and spent 7 weeks. Produced by Willie Mitchell and largely written by Peebles and her husband, Don Bryant, ''I Can't Stand the Rain'' included the R&B hits "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" and " I Can't Stand the Rain", the latter of which reached no. 6 on the R&B chart and no. 38 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 in 1973. Ann Peebles
Ann Lee Peebles (born April 27, 1947) is an American retired singer and songwriter who gained popularity for her Memphis soul albums of the 1970s while signed to Hi Records. Her most successful singles include " I Can't Stand the Rain", which she wrote with her husband Don Bryant and radio broadcaster Bernie Miller, and " I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down". Charles Edward Hodges (born June 29, 1947 in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American organist and songwriter. He is known for his high tone on the Hammond B3 organ, that appeared on records by Al Green, and other musicians signed to Hi Records. Hodges also played on albums by James Carr, Willie Cobbs, Albert Collins and Boz Scaggs. Hi Records acts Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright, as well as Green and Tom Jones, have all recorded songs written by Hodges. Sandy and Donna Rhodes are American singers and songwriters who have performed and recorded country music, and were also backing singers on many R&B records made in Memphis, Tennessee, particularly in the 1970s. He has written several hit songs for many recording artists, and has also arranged and performed on many Grammy winning recordings. Archie "Hubbie" Turner (born January 25, 1946), sometimes known as "Hubbie" Mitchell, is an American keyboard player and songwriter who was a member of the Hi Rhythm Section in Memphis, Tennessee and has featured on over forty albums. Andrew Love (November 21, 1941 – April 12, 2012) was an American saxophone player based in Memphis, Tennessee, best known for being a member of the Memphis Horns. Career Love was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and began his interest in music at the Baptist church where his father was pastor. His music education continued in high school and at Langston University in Oklahoma. He returned to Memphis in 1965 and began session work at Stax Records where he teamed up with trumpet player Wayne Jackson. The Memphis Horns was an American horn section, made famous by their many appearances on Stax Records. The duo consisted of Wayne Jackson on trumpet and Andrew Love on tenor saxophone. Wayne Lamar Jackson (November 24, 1941 – June 21, 2016) was an American soul and R&B musician, playing the trumpet in The Mar-Keys, in the house band at Stax Records and later as one of The Memphis Horns, described as "arguably the greatest soul horn section ever". Jackson was born in West Memphis, Arkansas, just a few days apart from his musical partner Andrew Love with whom he created the signature horn sound at Stax on hit records by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and others.
