ITF Seafarers' Trust
The ITF Seafarers' Trust is a charitable maritime trust located in London, United Kingdom. It was established in 1981 by the Executive Board of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), a global federation of transport workers' unions with over 4.6 million worker members. The stated mission of the Trust is to assist with "the moral, spiritual and physical welfare of seafarers regardless of nationality, race or creed." The Trust receives funds from both the Trust's own capital funds and by the investment income of the ITF Seafarers' International Assistance, Welfare and Protection Fund, more commonly known as the "Welfare Fund". That fund is used to provide a wide range of trade union services to seafarers. Norwegian Seafarers' Union
The Norwegian Seafarers' Union, NSU, ( no, Norsk Sjømannsforbund, NSF) is a trade union representing sailors in Norway. The union was established 25 September 1910, as the Norwegian Sailors' and Firemen's Union (Norsk Matros- og Fyrbøter-Union), and immediately affiliated to the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions. In 1933, it merged with the Norwegian Stewards' and Cooks' Union, and adopted its current name. The English translation was gradually changed over several years around 2000 from Norwegian Seamen's Union. The change came in order to emphasise NSU's international work for equal opportunities regardless of gender. International Christian Maritime Association
The International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA) is an ecumenical association of 28 Christian organisations, representing different churches and Christian communities. The members are all non-profit organisations actively engaged in welfare work for people who work at sea, including seafarers, fishers and the families of both. The Association is registered as a charity in the UK and, through its members, operates internationally. ICMA was founded in 1969. It seeks to encourage ecumenical collaboration and mutual assistance between its member organisations at international, national and individual port levels. International Seafarers' Welfare And Assistance Network
The International Seafarers' Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) is an international NGO and UK registered charity that aims to assists seafarers and their families. ISWAN is the result of a merger between two organisations. These were the International Committee on Seafarers' Welfare (ICSW) and the International Seafarers Assistance Network (ISAN). ICSW was formed in 1973 and ISAN was established in the late 1990s. These two welfare bodies merged in April 2013 to form ISWAN. ISWAN's headquarters are in Croydon, Greater London. History Nautilus traces its roots back more than 150 years, when the Mercantile Marine Service Association was founded in 1857 in response to the harsh laws of the 1850 Merchant Shipping Act. In 1936, the MMSA merged with the Imperial Merchant Service Guild and retained its name. Brian Orrell
Brian D. Orrell is a former British trade union leader. Born in Barrow-in-Furness, Orrell went to sea in 1965, training as an engineer with the Blue Funnel Line. He joined the Merchant Navy and Airline Officers Association (MNAOA), and from 1973 he worked full-time for the union as industrial officer of its Liverpool branch. While in this post, he studied with Ruskin College and then the Chelmer Institute Law School. In 1989, Orrell was elected as assistant general secretary of National Union of Marine, Aviation and Shipping Transport Officers (NUMAST), the successor to the MNAOA, and then he became general secretary in 1993. He represented the union at the International Transport Workers' Federation, and chaired its seafarers' group from 2000, achieving new agreements on working conditions, hours or work, and identity documents. Born in Wyoming, United States to a Vietnamese American mother and a Norwegian father, she moved to Norway, first to Stavanger at the age of 8, and later to Asker. Maritime Union Of Australia
The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) was a union which covered waterside workers, seafarers, port workers, professional divers, and office workers associated with Australian ports. The MUA was formed in 1993 with merger of the Seamen's Union of Australia and the Waterside Workers' Federation of Australia. In 2017 the MUA had about 16,000 members. It was affiliated with the Australian Council of Trade Unions, the Australian Labor Party and the International Transport Workers Federation.
