Hydroelectricity In Bulgaria
Hydroelectricity generated 11% of Bulgaria’s electricity in 2021. Future plans The government 2030 energy plan calls for an additional 870MW of hydro capacity. The possibility of two hydro dams on the Danube river, built and shared in conjunction with Romania are under consideration in 2023. Two pumped hydro plants are also planned using the existing Dospat Reservoir and the reservoir at Batak, each would generate 800MW capacity and provide a means to use excess wind and solar energy by pumping the water back up to the dams. Completion could be by 2032. Current facilities The 15 largest HEP stations, all owned by the state-run National Electricity Company, account for most of the country's HEP installed capacity and HEP power.National Electricity Company – Annual Report 2011 ''(PDF ... Background The Vacha passes through Krichim Dam and Vacha Dam that secure drinking water for Plovdiv and its plains. It runs through the Rhodopes The Rhodopes (; bg, Родопи, ; el, Ροδόπη, ''Rodopi''; tr, Rodoplar) are a mountain range in Southeastern Europe, and the largest by area in Bulgaria, with over 83% of its area in the southern part of the country and the remainder ... forming a deep valley where the two dams are located. An important town in the valley is Devin. It is the second largest river that has its source in the Rhodopes after the Arda. The Vacha does not flow close to any industrial enterprises, which is the reason for its clear water. The origin of ... Batak Hydro Power Plant
Batak Hydro Power Plant () is an active underground hydro power plant located in Batak, Bulgaria, which is a part of the Batak Hydropower Cascade.Спасов, Мире, Електрификацията на България и нейните строители, том 2, (1948 – 2000), Издател Херон Прес, София, 2000, с. 67, ISBN 954-580-079-8 History The idea for the construction of power plants along the Vacha River utilising the catchment area in the Western Rhodopes, dates back to 1920, when engineer Ivan Mavrov proposed it in his work "Archive of Water Power in Bulgaria". This idea was later taken up by engineer Todor Romanov in the 1930s. The conceptual and technical design for the entire "Batak Hydropower Cascade" was developed between 1951 and 1955 in "Hydro Energy Project".Спасов, Мире, Електрификацията на България и нейните строители, том 2, (1948 – 2000), Издател Херон Пр ...
