Hydra (constellation)
Hydra is the largest of the 88 modern constellations, measuring 1303 square degrees, and also the longest at over 100 degrees. Its southern end borders Libra (constellation), Libra and Centaurus (constellation), Centaurus and its northern end borders Cancer (constellation), Cancer. Delta Hydrae, Latinized from δ Hydrae, is a triple star in the equatorial constellation of Hydra. It is visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 4.146. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 20.34  mas, it is located about 160 light years distant. Characteristics This is a hierarchical triple system. δ Hydrae Aa and δ Hydrae Ab form a close binary system with an orbital separation of 0.9 astronomical units, taking about 200 days to complete an orbit. The outer companion, δ Hydrae B, has an angular separation of from the Aa–Ab pair, along a position angle of , as of 2003. 12 Hydrae is a probable astrometric binary star system located 202 light years away from the Sun in the equatorial constellation of Hydra. It has the Bayer designation D Hydrae; ''12 Hydrae'' is the Flamsteed designation. This system is visible to the naked eye as a faint, yellow-hued star with a combined apparent visual magnitude of 4.32.
