Huperzia Porophila
''Huperzia porophila'', the rock clubmoss or rock firmoss, grows throughout the Appalachian province of the Eastern United States and central Canada, from Ontario south to Georgia and Alabama. It is rare east of the Appalachians, being most common in a north–south belt along the western plateau area. ''Huperzia porophila'' grows only on or over rock and requires cool, moist, shaded, acid spots. It is a beautiful sight growing over boulders and outcrops. It is often confused with the shining firmoss (''Huperzia lucidula'') whose range it largely shares and which also often grows on rocks. The rock firmoss leaves, 3–8 mm long, are generally not shiny like those of the shining firmoss, and the ascending 12–15 cm stems are seldom branched. Francis Ernest Lloyd
Francis Ernest Lloyd (October 4, 1868 – October 10, 1947) was an American botanist. Life Lloyd was born in Manchester, England, and educated at Princeton University (A.B., 1891; A.M., 1895), in New Jersey, and in Europe at Munich and Bonn, in Germany. He was employed at various institutions of higher learning from 1891 onward. He served on the faculties of Williams College, Pacific University, Teachers College (Columbia University), Harvard Summer School, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (professor of botany, 1906–1912), and at McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada after 1912. Lloyd worked as an investigator in the Desert Botanical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution in 1906 and as cytologist of the Arizona Experiment Station in 1907. Hocking Hills
The Hocking Hills is a deeply dissected area of the Allegheny Plateau in Appalachian Ohio, primarily in Hocking County, that features cliffs, gorges, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The relatively extreme topography in this area is due to the Blackhand Sandstone (so named because of Native American graphics on the formation near Newark, Ohio), a particular formation that is thick, hard and weather-resistant, and so forms high cliffs and narrow, deep gorges. Huperzia
''Huperzia'' is a genus of lycophyte plants, sometimes known as the firmosses or fir clubmosses; the ''Flora of North America'' calls them gemma fir-mosses. This genus was originally included in the related genus ''Lycopodium'', from which it differs in having undifferentiated sporangial leaves, and the sporangia not formed into apical cones. The common name ''firmoss'', used for some of the north temperate species, refers to their superficial resemblance to branches of fir (''Abies''), a conifer. , two very different circumscriptions of the genus were in use. In the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I), ''Huperzia'' is one of three genera in the subfamily Huperzioideae of the family Lycopodiaceae. ''Huperzia selago'', the northern firmoss or fir clubmoss, is a vascular plant in the family Lycopodiaceae. It is small-ish, sturdy, stiff and upright and densely scale-leaved. ''Huperzia lucidula'' (also called the shining firmoss or shining clubmoss) is a bright, evergreen, rhizomatous clubmoss of the genus ''Huperzia''. They grow in loose tufts 14–20 cm long, occasionally up to 1 m long. The leaves are 7–11 mm long (shorter, 3–6 mm, at annual nodes) and narrow, lance-shaped, shiny, and evergreen. The edges are irregularly “toothed” with small serrations. The sporangia (spore cases) are nestled in the bases of the upper leaves. The roots of this plant grow from a creeping and branching underground rhizome.
