Humberside (European Parliament Constituency)
Humberside was a European Parliament constituency, covering most of the former Humberside district of England. Before its uniform adoption of proportional representation in 1999, the United Kingdom used plurality voting system, first-past-the-post for the Elections in the European Union, European elections in England, Scotland and Wales. The European Parliament constituency, European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had one Member of the European Parliament each. In 1999, the constituency became part of the much larger Yorkshire and the Humber (European Parliament constituency), Yorkshire and the Humber constituency. 1989 European Parliament Election In The United Kingdom
The 1989 European Parliament election, was the third European election to be held in the United Kingdom. It was held on 15 June. The electoral system was First-past-the-post voting in England, Scotland and Wales and Single transferable vote in Northern Ireland. The turnout was again the lowest in Europe. This election saw the best performance ever by the Green Party (UK) (formerly the Ecology Party), collecting over 2 million votes and 15% of the vote share. It had only received 70,853 as the Ecology Party in the previous election. However, because of the first past the post system, the Green Party did not gain a single MEP, while the Scottish National Party received 1 seat with only 3% of the vote share. The Green Party's vote total of 2,299,287 remains its best performance in a national election, as does its percentage result of 14.5%. Lincolnshire is a ceremonial county in England, United Kingdom. The ceremonial county is a combination of the non-metropolitan county of Lincolnshire and two unitary authority areas in the north. Peter Crampton (politician)
Peter Crampton (10 June 1932 – 12 July 2011) was a British Labour Party politician who was the Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1989 to 1999 representing the Humberside constituency. He was also the father of ''Times'' journalist Robert Crampton. Biography He was born in Blackpool in 1932 and educated at Blackpool Grammar School and Nottingham University. He was a teacher and lecturer of geography. He married a geography teacher from London in 1955. They had two sons, born in 1962 and 1964. After a spell in Solihull, in 1970 the family moved to Hull so he could take up a post at Hull College of Higher Education (now merged into the University of Lincoln). In Hull he was active in Labour politics. He retired from teaching in 1988 and was briefly a parliamentary researcher for MP Joan Ruddock.
