Hui People
The Hui people ( zh, c=, p=Huízú, w=Hui2-tsu2, Xiao'erjing: , dng, Хуэйзў, ) are an East Asian ethnoreligious group predominantly composed of Chinese-speaking adherents of Islam. They are distributed throughout China, mainly in the northwestern provinces and in the Zhongyuan region. According to the 2011 census, China is home to approximately 10.5 million Hui people. The 110,000 Dungan people of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are also considered part of the Hui ethnicity. The Hui have a distinct connection with Islamic culture. For example, they follow Islamic dietary laws and reject the consumption of pork, the most commonly consumed meat in China, and have developed their own variation of Chinese cuisine. They also dress differently than the Han Chinese, some men wear white caps ( taqiyah) and some women wear headscarves, as is the case in many Islamic cultures. Situ Huimin (; 16 February 1910 – 4 April 1987), was a Chinese film director, screenwriter and actor, born in Kaiping, Guangdong. He joined the Communist Youth League in 1925 and the Communist Party of China in 1927. The next year, he went to Japan to study arts and there, he became interested in filmmaking. After returning to China in 1930, he actively participated in left-wing theater movement. Then, he worked as set designer and sound engineer in film industry. His debut as a film director was '' Spirit of Freedom'' (), produced by Diantong Film Company in 1935. Subsequently, he joined the Lianhua Film Company in Shanghai. After the outbreak of the war he went to Hong Kong, where he continued to work both in film and in theater. During this period he created couple of anti-Japanese films. Yang Huimin
Yang Huimin (; March 6, 1915 – March 9, 1992) was a Girl Guide during the 1937 Battle of Shanghai who supplied a flag and brought supplies to besieged defenders of the Sihang Warehouse. Her actions proved inspiring to the defenders, who flew the flag the next daybreak in front of thousands of watching eyes across the bank of the Suzhou Creek. Personal life Yang had studied physical education in Shanghai and was a member of the Girl Scouts when the war broke out. Her courageous action during the Defense of Sihang Warehouse made her famous. In 1938, she was sent overseas to raise support and spoke about China's struggle in a number of countries. Zhang Huimin (张慧敏; born 1999) is a Chinese girl who completed a run from the southern Chinese province of Hainan to Beijing when she was eight years old. Each day, she rose at 2:30am, and ran the equivalent of 1.5 marathons, therefore running around per day. After this, Huimin ran from Shanghai to Nyalam County, Tibet, a distance of . Huimin managed to arrive after just 51 days. Waking once again at 2:30am each morning, she would run until 7pm covering nearly per day, and wearing out 39 pairs of shoes in the process. In 2009, Huimin set out to set a record for the Chinese government. She was to run until continuously only stopping for 15 minutes to rest every 6 hours.
