Armenian Orthography Reform
The Armenian orthography reform occurred between 1922 and 1924 in Soviet Armenia and was partially revised in 1940. Its main features "were the neutralization of classical, etymological writing and the adjustment of phonetic realization and writing." The original orthography is now known as the classical orthography ( ''dasakan uġġagrut'yun'') and is sometimes referred to as ''Mashtotsian orthography'' (), after Mesrop Mashtots, who invented the Armenian alphabet in 405 AD. This reform is not to be confused with the 13th-century alphabet extension introducing letters and . Hovhannes Bagramyan
Ivan Khristoforovich Bagramyan, born Hovhannes Baghramyan ( – 21 September 1982), was a Soviet military commander of Armenian origin who held the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union. As commander of the 1st Baltic Front, he orchestrated the offensives which pushed German forces out of the Baltic republics during World War II. During World War II, Bagramyan was the second non- Slavic military officer, after Latvian Max Reyter, to become a commander of a front. He was among several Armenians in the Soviet Army who held the highest proportion of high-ranking officers in the Soviet military during the war. Jukes, p. 25. Hovhannes Hakhverdyan
Hovhannes Vasily Hakhverdyan (; ) (29 July 1873 – 28 April 1931) was the first Minister of Defence of the First Republic of Armenia from 15 April 1918 to 27 March 1919. Early life Hovhannes Hakhverdyan was born in Saint Petersburg on 29 July 1873 in an Armenian noble family. His father, Vasily Fyodor Hakhverdov, was a Real State Councilor. He had two brothers, Major General Gavriil Hakhverdov and Lieutenant Colonel Georgiy Hakhverdov. He graduated from the 1st Cadet Corps of Saint Peterburg in 1890, the 1st Military Pavlov School in 1892 and the Nikolaev Academy of Joint Staff in 1902. Military career Hakhverdyan participated in the Russian-Japanese War. He was appointed a Major General of the Russian Army on 22 October 1915. Hovhannes Ghorghanyan
Hovhannes Korganyan/Ghorghanyan (; 1833–?) was a Russian-Armenian economist who served as the first mayor of Yerevan from 1879 to 1884. Biography Hovhannes Korganyan/Ghorghanyan, a Russian-Armenian economist, was born in 1833 in Tiflis to a family of hereditary aristocrats. He graduated from the Tiflis Real Gymnasium. Starting in 1854, he worked in public service. Initially, he served in Tiflis, but later moved to Yerevan, where he secured a position at the district school of the Caucasus educational district. This school was eventually transformed into a classical gymnasium. At the pro-gymnasium, Korganyan/Ghorghanyan worked as a trustee and later became a teacher in 1885.
