Houston Cougars Baseball
The Houston Cougars baseball team is the college baseball team of the University of Houston. Along with the university's other athletic teams, the baseball team is a member of the Big 12 Conference as a NCAA Division I, Division I team. They play their home games at Schroeder Park. In addition to 22 NCAA Division I baseball tournament, NCAA tournament appearances, the Cougars have made four Super Regional and two College World Series appearances. Houston has been led by head coach Todd Whitting since 2011. History Early years and Lovette Hill era The University of Houston's baseball program started in 1947. Big 12 Conference
The Big 12 Conference is a collegiate List of NCAA conferences, athletic conference in the United States. 1953 College World Series
The 1953 College World Series was the seventh NCAA-sanctioned baseball tournament that determined a national champion. The tournament was held as the conclusion of the 1953 NCAA baseball season and was played at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE from June 11 to June 16. The tournament's champion was Michigan, coached by Ray Fisher. The Most Outstanding Player was J. L. Smith of Texas. The tournament consisted of no preliminary round of play as teams were selected directly into the College World Series. Cougar Field
Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park (formerly known as Cougar Field) is a baseball park in Houston, Texas. It is the home field of the Houston Cougars baseball team. Several iterations of the ballpark have existed. The current stadium holds 5,000 people, and opened for baseball in 1995. With a 1,500 square foot Daktronics video board, Schroeder Park features the second-largest scoreboard in college baseball. Minor League Baseball (MiLB) is a professional baseball organization below Major League Baseball (MLB), constituted of teams affiliated with MLB clubs. Rayner Noble
James Rayner Noble (born August 7, 1961) is an American former baseball coach and player. He last served as head coach at the University of Houston. In his 16 years coaching Houston, he is the winningest coach in program history. Noble's career coaching record is 551–420 (.567). A native of Houston, Texas, Noble attended Spring Woods High School and holds both a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Houston. From 1983 to 1987, Noble played Minor League Baseball in the Houston Astros organization. Noble wore one of the highest numbers in college baseball (#85, as opposed to his playing #9), which he said he wore to remind himself of becoming a Christian in 1985. Texas League
The Texas League is a Minor League Baseball league which has operated in the South Central United States since 1902. It is classified as a Double-A league. Despite the league's name, only its five South Division teams are actually based in the state of Texas; the five North Division teams are located in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Shortstop, abbreviated SS, is the baseball positions, baseball or softball fielding position between second base, second and third base, which is considered to be among the Defensive spectrum, most demanding defensive positions. Southwest Conference
The Southwest Conference (SWC) was an NCAA Division I college athletic conference in the United States that existed from 1914 to 1996. Composed primarily of schools from Texas, at various times the conference also included schools from Oklahoma and Arkansas.
