''Perry Como Sings the Hits from Broadway Shows'', or simply ''Hits from Broadway Shows'', is a studio album by Perry Como released by RCA Victor in 1953. The album was originally issued on a 10-inch LP (cat. no. LPM-3124) and contained eight tracks (four on each side). There is also a 1956 version with 12 tracks (six on each side). Reception The album was featured on ''Billboard (magazine), Billboards alphabetical ''Popular Albums'' chart. Perry Como
Pierino Ronald "Perry" Como (; May 18, 1912 – May 12, 2001) was an American singer, actor, and television personality. During a career spanning more than half a century, he recorded exclusively for RCA Victor for 44 years, from 1943 until 1987. "Mr. C.", as Como was nicknamed, reportedly sold over 100 million records worldwide and pioneered a weekly musical variety television show. His weekly television shows and seasonal specials were broadcast throughout the world. Como recorded primarily vocal pop and was renowned for recordings in the intimate, easy-listening genre pioneered by multimedia star Bing Crosby. In the official RCA Records Billboard (magazine), ''Billboard'' magazine memorial, Como's life was summed up in these few words: "50 years of music and a life well lived. An example to all." "Bali Ha'i", also spelled "Bali Hai", is a show tune from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical '' South Pacific''. The name refers to a mystical island, visible on the horizon but not reachable, and was originally inspired by the sight of Ambae island from neighboring Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu, where author James Michener was stationed in World War II. In ''South Pacific'' In the musical, Bali Ha'i is a volcanic island within sight of the island on which most of the action takes place. The troops think of Bali Ha'i as an exotic paradise, but it is off-limits—except to officers. Bali Ha'i's matriarch, Bloody Mary, conducts much business with the troops, and she meets Lt. "My Heart Stood Still" is a 1927 popular song composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Lorenz Hart. It was written for the Charles Cochran revue ''One Dam' Thing after Another'', which opened at the London Pavilion on May 19, 1927. The show starred Jessie Matthews, Douglas Byng, Lance Lister, and Richard Dolman, running for 237 performances. Background In March 1927, Rodgers and Hart had traveled to Paris from London to meet with the arranger Robert Russell Bennett, to try to persuade him to orchestrate the songs for their upcoming London revue, ''One Dam' Thing After Another''. "You'll Never Walk Alone" is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical '' Carousel''. In the second act of the musical, Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the protagonist Julie Jordan, sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" to comfort and encourage Julie when her husband, Billy Bigelow, the male lead, stabs himself with a knife whilst trying to run away after attempting a robbery with his mate Jigger and dies in her arms. Mitchell Ayres (December 24, 1909 – September 5, 1969) was an orchestra leader, music arranger, composer and performer. He is best known for his many years of work with Perry Como on radio, records, and television and as the musical conductor for ''The Hollywood Palace''. Early years Born Mitchell Agress in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he attended Columbia University, majoring in physical education, but began performing professionally at the Brooklyn Academy of Music while still a Columbia student. After graduation, Ayres became a violinist with the Roxy Theatre (New York City), Roxy Theater Orchestra; he later moved on to the same position with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
