__NOTOC__ The history of rail transport in Slovakia began in November 1836, at the founding meeting of the participating companies for the construction of a horse railway from Bratislava to Trnava (later extended to Sereď). The first section of that railway was launched on 27 September 1840. The first locomotive powered railway in today's Slovakia was constructed by the Hungarian "Northern Railway Company" on the Bratislava– Marchegg– Gänserndorf (–Vienna) line, commissioned on 20 August 1848. By 1872, upon the completion of the Košice–Bohumín Railway, railways linked one end of Upper Hungary with the other. Following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 that created the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary, transport issues became the responsibility of the Hungarian Government, which also inherited the duty to support local railway companies. Ružomberok (; german: Rosenberg; hu, Rózsahegy; pl, Rużomberk) is a town in northern Slovakia, in the historical Liptov region.
