History Of Model Organisms
Model organisms are specific organisms studied to gain knowledge of other organisms, to generalize both within and between species. Model organisms offer standards for comparison of other organisms.Rader, ''Making Mice'', p. 16 Model organism strains are standardized by inbreeding and cloning, to limit genetic variation and create a precise basis for comparison. Some organisms are experimentally convenient and/or important for their history and research community. The idea of the model organism first took root in the middle of the 19th century with the work of scientists like Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel and their respective work on natural selection and the genetics of heredity. Thomas Hunt Morgan
Thomas Hunt Morgan (September 25, 1866 – December 4, 1945) was an Americans, American evolutionary biologist, geneticist, Embryology, embryologist, and science author who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1933 for discoveries elucidating the role that the chromosome plays in heredity. Morgan received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in zoology in 1890 and researched embryology during his tenure at Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr. Following the rediscovery of Mendelian inheritance in 1900, Morgan began to study the genetic characteristics of the fruit fly ''Drosophila melanogaster''. Frank Eugene Lutz
Frank Eugene Lutz (September 15, 1879 – November 27, 1943) was an American entomologist. Biography He graduated from Haverford College, Pennsylvania, in 1900 (A.B.), then from the University of Chicago in 1902 (A.M.), and then entered University College, London, England, where he was a student of Karl Pearson. He was resident investigator at the Carnegie Institution's new Station for Experimental Evolution at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, New York from 1904 to 1909 where he did genetic studies of Drosophila. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1907. His thesis was on cricket variation. In 1909, he became assistant curator of invertebrate zoology at American Museum of Natural History, New York City, becoming associate curator in 1916. Charles W
The F/V ''Charles W'', also known as Annie J Larsen, is a historic fishing schooner anchored in Petersburg, Alaska. At the time of its retirement in 2000, it was the oldest fishing vessel in the fishing fleet of Southeast Alaska, and the only known wooden fishing vessel in the entire state still in active service. Launched in 1907, she was first used in the halibut fisheries of Puget Sound and the Bering Sea as the ''Annie J Larsen''. In 1925 she was purchased by the Alaska Glacier Seafood Company, refitted for shrimp trawling, and renamed ''Charles W'' in honor of owner Karl Sifferman's father. The company was one of the pioneers of the local shrimp fishery, a business it began to phase out due to increasing competition in the 1970s.
