Hikmat Al-Hijri
Hikmat Salman al-Hijri () is one of three spiritual leaders of the Druze community in Syria and a prominent religious and social figure in Suwayda Governorate. Early life Al-Hijri was born on 9 June 1965 in Venezuela, where his father was working at the time. He and his family returned to Syria to complete his primary and secondary education. In 1985, he enrolled at Damascus University to study law and graduated in 1990. Spiritual leadership In 2012, al-Hijri succeeded his brother Ahmed as the spiritual leader of the Druze community after the latter's death in a car accident. The position has been hereditary within the family since the 19th century. Southern Syria Clashes (July 2025–present)
On 13 July 2025, fighting began between Druze and Bedouin armed groups in the city of Suwayda and its surrounding villages in southern Syria. The Syrian transitional government deployed the Syrian Armed Forces to the area to restore order between 14–16 July. An agreement was reached between Druze leaders and the government on 15 July, but one of the Druze leaders, Hikmat al-Hijri, called for armed resistance against the government and Bedouin.
