Hiawatha (Milwaukee Road Trains)
The ''Hiawathas'' were a fleet of List of named passenger trains, named passenger trains operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (also known as the Milwaukee Road) between Chicago and various destinations in the Midwest United States, Midwest and Western United States. The most notable of these trains was the original ''Twin Cities Hiawatha'', which served the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Twin Cities in Minnesota. The train was named for the epic poem ''The Song of Hiawatha'' by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Hiawatha ( , also : ), also known as Ayenwatha or Aiionwatha, was a precolonial Native American leader and cofounder of the Iroquois Confederacy. He was a leader of the Onondaga people, the Mohawk people, or both. According to some accounts, he was born an Onondaga but adopted into the Mohawks. Legend Although Hiawatha was possibly a real person, he was mostly known through his legend. The events in the legend have been dated to the middle 1100s through the occurrence of an eclipse coincident with the founding of the Iroquois Confederacy.Dates of 1390–1630 have also been proposed. Milwaukee Road Class A
The Milwaukee Road Class "A" was a class of high-speed, streamlined "Atlantic" type steam locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) from 1935 to 1937 to haul the Milwaukee Road's ''Hiawatha'' express passenger trains. Numbered from No. 1 to No. 4, they were among the last Atlantic type locomotives built in the United States, and certainly the largest and most powerful. The class were the first locomotives in the world built for daily operation at over , and the first class built completely streamlined, bearing their casings their entire lives. Although partially supplanted by the larger class "F7" Hudsons from 1937, they remained in top-flight service until the end. The ''Olympian'' and its successor the ''Olympian Hiawatha'' were passenger trains operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (the "Milwaukee Road") between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest. The ''Olympian'' operated from 1911 to 1947 and was, along with its running mate the '' Columbian'', the first all-steel train to operate in the Pacific Northwest. Midwest Hiawatha
The ''Midwest Hiawatha'' was a passenger train on the Milwaukee Road, one of many Milwaukee Road trains with a ''Hiawatha'' name. The service began December 11, 1940 between Chicago's Union Station and Omaha, Nebraska, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, through northern Illinois and Iowa and South Dakota. Initially the train used Atlantic 4-4-2 steam engines and cars freed by the 1938 re-equipping of the ''Twin Cities Hiawathas'', including the distinctive Beaver Tail parlor-observation cars. In 1940 the train covered between Chicago and Omaha in 480 minutes. Unlike the competition between Chicago and the Missouri River, the ''Midwest Hiawatha'' was scheduled during daylight, which helped boost patronage.
