Hetti Kemarr Perkins
Hetti Kemerre Perkins (born 1965) is an Aboriginal Australian art curator and writer. She is known for her work at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where she was the senior curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the gallery from around 1998 until 2011, and for many significant exhibitions and projects. Early life and education Hetti Kemerre Perkins is an Eastern Arrernte and Kalkadoon woman from Central Australia. She was born in 1965, the daughter of Aboriginal Australian activist Charles Perkins and his wife Eileen Munchenberg. Hetti is a granddaughter of Hetty Perkins; sister to film director Rachel Perkins and brother Adam Perkins. Her mother created an art gallery showcasing Aboriginal art in the family home's garage in Canberra, and she was influenced by her father's Indigenous rights advocacy. Judy Watson (born 1959) is an Australian Waanyi multi-media artist who works in print-making, painting, video and installation. Her work often examines Indigenous Australian histories, and she has received a number of high-profile commissions for public spaces. Early life and education Judy Watson was born in Mundubbera, Queensland in 1959. She is a Brisbane-based Waanyi artist. She was educated at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education in Toowoomba, where she received a Diploma of Creative Arts in 1979; at the University of Tasmania where she received a bachelor's degree (1980–82); and at Monash University, where she completed a graduate diploma in 1986. Yvonne Koolmatrie
Yvonne Koolmatrie (born 1944) is an Australian artist and weaver of the Ngarrindjeri people, working in South Australia. Early life Koolmatrie was born in Wudinna, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. Her father was a Kokatha man, Joseph Roberts, and her mother Margaret was a Ngarrindjeri / Ramindjeri woman from the Coorong. Koolmatrie grew up in Meningie and the Coorong region, later moving to the Riverland town, Berri. Career Koolmatrie learned her craft in the early 1980s from elder and weaver, Dorothy Kartinyeri. Their coiled bundle technique uses local spiny-headed sedge ( Cyperus gymnocaulos), known to the artist as ''bilbili'' and river rushes, and Koolmatrie is credited with saving the traditional Ngarrindjeri craft. Emily Kame Kngwarreye
Emily Kam Kngwarray (c.1914-1996) was born in her Ancestral lands, Alhalker located in the Sandover region of the Northern Territory, Australia. One of the world’s most significant contemporary painters to emerge in the twentieth century Kngwarray practiced in batik and painting on canvas, creating art that embodied her detailed knowledge of the places she lived in throughout her life. She layered motifs representing the plants, animals and geological features that formed the desert ecosystems around her. Beginning in batik in 1977 and moving to painting on canvas in 1988 she also occasionally worked on paper. In the early 1990s Kngwarray made some prints, including etchings and linocuts. Brenda L. Croft (born 1964) is an Aboriginal Australian artist, curator, writer, and educator working across contemporary Indigenous and mainstream arts and cultural sectors. Croft was a founding member of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in 1987. Early life and education Croft was born in 1964 in Perth and is from the Gurindji, Malngin and Mudburra peoples, as well as having Anglo-Australian/German/Irish/ Chinese heritage.
