Heteraspis Laeviuscula
''Heteraspis'' (formerly ''Scelodonta'') is a genus of leaf beetles in the subfamily Eumolpinae. The genus includes over 70 species, mainly from the Afrotropical, Palearctic and Oriental biogeographic realms. Only three species are found in Australia. According to recent literature, the name ''Scelodonta'' Westwood, 1838 is actually a junior synonym of ''Heteraspis'' Chevrolat ''in'' Dejean, 1836. As the conditions for reversal of precedence in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature are not met, ''Heteraspis'' should be used as the valid name for the genus. Species Select species include: * '' Heteraspis aeneola'' (Lefèvre, 1885) * ''Heteraspis albidovittata'' ( Baly, 1877) ** '' Heteraspis albidovittata albidovittata'' ( Baly, 1877) ** '' Heteraspis albidovittata ruandensis'' (Burgeon, 1941) * '' Heteraspis albomaculata'' (Pic, 1939) * '' Heteraspis albopectoralis'' (Pic, 1943) * '' Heteraspis alternata'' ( Jacoby, 1908) * '' Heteraspis areolata'' (Lefèvre, 1891) * ... International Code Of Zoological Nomenclature
The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) is a widely accepted Convention (norm), convention in zoology that rules the formal scientific name, scientific naming of organisms treated as animals. It is also informally known as the ICZN Code, for its formal author, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (which shares the acronym "ICZN"). The rules principally regulate: * How names are correctly established in the frame of Binomial nomenclature, binominal nomenclature * How to determine whether a given name is Available name, available * Which available name must be used in case of name conflicts (Valid name (zoology), valid name) * How scientific literature must cite names Zoological nomenclature is independent of other systems of nomenclature, for example botanical nomenclature. This implies that animals can have the same generic names as plants (e.g. there is a genus ''Abronia (other), Abronia'' in both animals and plants). The rules and re ... Martin Jacoby
Martin Jacoby (12 April 1842, Altona, Hamburg, Altona, Duchy of Holstein – 24 December 1907, London) was a German entomologist who specialised in Coleoptera, especially Chrysomelidae (formerly known as Phytophaga). He was also a musician who played in the orchestra of the Royal Italian Opera in London, and later became a violin tutor. Jacoby was born in Altona, Hamburg, Altona near Hamburg and grew up near the port. He later became a leather merchant but his interest was in music and natural history. He studied violin and at the age of twenty he gave up his leather business and moved to England to join Sir Charles Hallé's orchestra in Manchester. He also began to collect insects and birds even before leaving Germany. He was in touch with many German entomological collectors like Thörey, Koltze, and Gräser. He sold off his first large entomological collection to Jacob R. H. Neervoort van de Poll, Van der Poll of Holland in 1880. The ornithologist Edward Hargitt advised him to ... Joseph Sugar Baly
Joseph Sugar Baly (1816 – 27 March 1890) was an English medical doctor and entomologist. He described a number of species of beetle in the family Chrysomelidae. Baly was born in Warwick, first son of Joseph Baly. He studied at the local grammar school under Reverend George Innes. He then studied at St. George's Hospital and worked with Dr Burd at the Shrewsbury Infirmary. He also studied in Paris before practicing medicine at Leamington. He later established a large practice in London. He became interested in entomology in his thirties after taking up microscope studies. Baly became a specialist on the leaf-feeding beetles, then placed in the Coleoptera: Chrysomeloidea, Phytophaga. He mostly described species collected by others and was one of the first entomologists to examine the male genitalia of insects for species diagnosis. He sold off his London practice in 1868 due to poor health and moved back to Warwick where he served as an honorary curator of the museum. He worked o ...
