Herbert White (cricketer)
Herbert Southey White (August 1830 – 17 May 1863) was an English clergyman and a cricketer who played in six first-class cricket matches for Cambridge University in 1851 and 1852. He was born at Tivetshall, Norfolk and died at Tunstead, also in Norfolk. White was educated at Bury St Edmunds Grammar School and at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was a Rustat Scholar, taking advantage of a fund for the sons of deceased clergy. He played cricket as a middle- or lower-order batsman, though it is not known whether he was right- or left-handed. He top-scored with an unbeaten 28 for Cambridge in the match against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) preceding the 1851 University Match against Oxford University, but failed to be picked for his Blue. The following season, despite being unsuccessful in other matches, he was picked for the University Match, where he made scores of 5 and 7 in a heavy defeat for his side, which played one man short (10 players against Oxford's 11). Herbert James White (6 June 1907 – 8 April 1944) was an Australian rules football player at the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football In 1926, he became one of the club's premiership players, under the auspices of captain-coach Albert Chadwick. White made his debut against in Round 1 of the 1926 VFL season, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He has been given the Melbourne Heritage Number of 439, based on the order of his debut for the club. Herbert Thirkell White
Sir Herbert Thirkell White (1855–1931) was the Lieutenant Governor of the British Indian province of Burma (1905–1910) and author of works about Burma. Biography The son of Richard White, he was educated at Dulwich College and Brasenose College, Oxford. White joined I.C.S., served in all lower grades of the public service and was posted as Commissioner, Burma-China Boundary, 1897; appointed Chief Judge of the Chief Court, Burma, 1900; Lieut.-Governor, Burma, 1905–1910. During his time as Lieutenant Governor, he reduced the amount of the annual tributes from the Shan Chiefs and promoted education among them and carried out certain Railway Extensions in the Shan States. White was the Secretary to Upper Burma from 1886 to 1890, the period that was immediately after the annexation of Upper Burma by the British following the Third Anglo-Burmese War. Ralph Herbert White (born June 15, 1948) is a former basketball player during the 1970–71 season for the Atlanta Hawks. At 6'2" and 195 lbs., he played as a guard/forward. Born in Valdosta, Georgia, White attended Decatur High School in Decatur, Georgia. He was voted the number one high school player in Georgia by the ''Atlanta Journal-Constitution'' in his senior year at Decatur High School. He went to the University of Georgia and as a senior in 1969-70, the starting forward averaged 9.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the 13-12 Bulldogs. He was drafted in the eighth round (133rd overall) of the 1970 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He played in 38 games, starting five, serving primarily as a backup to fellow rookie and future Hall-of-Famer Pete Maravich. He was also Maravich's roommate on the road. Whitey's Lindy Hoppers was a professional performing group of exceptional swing dancers that was first organized in the late 1920s by Herbert "Whitey" White in the Savoy Ballroom and disbanded in 1942 after its male members were drafted into World War II. The group took on many different forms and had several different names and sub-groups, including Whitey's Hopping Maniacs, Harlem Congeroo Dancers, and The Hot Chocolates. In addition to touring nationally and internationally, the group appeared in several films and Broadway theatre productions. Dorothy Dandridge and Sammy Davis Jr. were among the group's celebrity regulars.
